I am in need of a new film output system and am looking into the Epson 1430 but I am also in need of a wide format printer for heat transfers. I've read that dye based ink is what I need for the film output and pigment based ink is needed for the transfers so I was wondering if I install a CIS system with pigment CMYK inks and dye black inks if this would work? Anyone try it before?

You can simply use the pigment ink for transfers. Pigment ink wont be as dark and some just can't get over that but pigment contains UV blockers. Look at rubylith it not 100% opaque but will filter out the UV light. I have some UV dye ink that even if I pour it on a film in a puddle and let it dry you can still see thru it. Exposing halftones without issue. I jumped the gun and ordered other ink because of the translucency.

So it is possible to fill the CMYK carts up with pigment ink for the transfers and fill the black carts up with dye ink and there will be no issues with printing both film transparencies AND transfers without changing ink carts? Will the film transparencies be dark enough? When I print black ink on a transfer, it will be the dye ink. Will this affect the transfer?

No just print with pigment. You can not use black dye for heat transfers. The pigment works even being translucent.

The darkness of the film means nothing. Its all about how much UV light is blocked. A few years back a salesman came by with a cartridge of clear ink. He printed a film which you could barely see it printed. I thought I was getting punked. Exposed film and washed out perfectly. Same thing here applies to pigment. Pigment is the archival ink that last in direct UV light for 100 years. This is because it contains UV blockers. Dye is only good for a few years in direct sunlight. Even the best UV dye inks only last 25 years. A lot of your "screen film inks" are a mixture of dye, pigment with a opaque pigment.

You can do this but its going to use a lot of ink. Each time you change the cartridges it will clean and charge the head. You would most likely have to do a 2nd cleaning to get all the ink out or print a few full page full color images. Its more doable with the 1400 as it stores no ink but the 1430 does like all the other Artisan printers.
