other than screenprinting...

What would you say is the best way to print text onto a shirt?
Vinyl?
Self-weeding transfers are okay, but, you need a laser for that.
How about a monochrome laser that prints black?
Would that work?
But, it would only work on light-colored shirts.
On black shirts you can use transfers, but, you'll have that white window around it? Can you use a cutter for transfers and go that route?
Sorry, I'm just trying to avoid screens for now.
It's kinda messy and I have NO space to work in.
Thanks.

Mr funone, you can use a print and cut machine like a Roland and you can cut the transfer right around the image. This allows you to have a colour print without the white block.

Vinyl would hold up better than transfers though, wouldn't it, especially for lettering?
I'm mostly concerned about text for now.
Thanks.
i have been told that they will both outlast the shirt's lifetime but the print may fade over time.
If you're just using lettering I would go with the vinyl. You can also cut out simple designs with vinyl as well. And you can expand to do vinyl signs and decals for car windows.
