Onyx help and the mystery of David Burkowitz

Hello,
A couple of months ago we got a Kornit 931DS and have been struggling with it from the start. That's not to say we can't print anything, we get amazing results with certain art in certain situations.

Anyway, we recently got Onyx 7 to prepare the files, we are still using the 8bit RIP on the actual Kornit itself (don't know if that is standard or not).

We don't have a device that can measure colour from the garments and I don't really know how to go about profiling the Kornit so Onyx can give better output. I heard that David Burkowitz from Kornit America has profiled the 931DS for use with the Onyx RIP. Does anyone know where I can download these profiles/settings? I can't find them anywhere.

After making too many piles of t-shirts testing every concievable nuance of how the Kornit handles colour, I don't want to retest EVERYTHING just because we have a new RIP. Any light that anyone can shed would be much appreciated.

and ask this question there. I would be happy to have my staff help but we use Wasatch to rip our files and the profiles are different. You will find a very helpful group of Kornit owners at the forum.

Yeah, I sent Justin an e-mail, so hopefully I will be able to post there soon. That site has already helped out a couple of times.

I've been trying to wrangle the Onyx RIP into submission, but we still get better results with our own custom Photoshop actions and no RIP (straight to the 8bit on the Kornit machine, no Onyx processing).

It seems like to get the most out of the Onyx I need to use the built in colour calibration options. These require a colour measuring device so I was wondering what you would recommend for a Kornit/Onyx set up at a decent price (if there is such a thing).

Ring up the Isreali tech hot line, they should hv a profile readily available for you to use. they are not in the kornit website.

i did try to email david burkowitz for "his" profile but to no avail, i wonder what capacity is he in doing that profile if he isnt goin to make it available to other kornit machine owners! anyway !

u can do your own profile by getting a Eyeone spectrophotometer , but it is rather time and ink consuming. (the vendor should be able to teach u how to operate and do your own profiling !) I would suggest work with the profile from kornit first before building your own.

Profiling can be a pain in butt....
Never done on shirt thank god but need steady hand and a little time to get it right

Eyeone set-up can run you from 900 to 5 thous bucks
I think you need something 9-1300 bases, not a big invest

OK, I didn't realise they had profiles that aren't on the site (seriously, what's the point of that? 0_o ), I will give that a try. Hopefully they have a Onyx 7 compatible version.

As for profiling ourselves, damn, I didn't realise devices would cost that much, here I was thinking they'd be a couple hundred pounds max.

@Bob Emb: We've heard a lot of bad, or at least "non-preference" for the Wasatch RIP, so I think we'll give it a miss, but thanks anyway..

I should now be on the Kornit Forums. Hopefully find more info there.

You'll start to see a trend. The Kornit machines are more like sportscars than anything else. Tempermental and require lots of expensive parts and services.

That's good, because the "its your fault that your machine doesn't work", and "we have never seen this problem before...." attitude was getting old.
