what's up pandemonium:

i researched the same thing recently and downloaded a bunch of reference files to see how the artists back then achieved their work. (check out some of these. i went to google and searched vintage soviet propaganda posters.......there was alot of good sites).

most of them look very graphiky......solid shapes, harsh lines with vibrant colors. there were some that had the oil paint finesse i guess you would say, but those were few and far between. we gotta remember how they were printed. most look as though they were screen printed.

i guess if i had any suggestions i would say pick out some vibrant colors for the foreground and shadow layers and separate them with sharp edges; not alot of detail. and then pick a dark background and throw some texture into that. hope that makes sense. good luck! -peace.

thanks msabas, miktoxic and frankiko for your replies. they really helped me out here...

that poster on gomediazine really does resemble some propaganda stuff. would really benefit my design..

however, is there any tutorial anywhere that you guys know of that gives a step by step method of achieving the effects of said posters? like how to acquire a worn out torn fungus look on old paper kinda vibe if u get what i mean lol.

for those types of effects you will need to find a good stock image and apply that image to the bg to give that typ eof effect its not difficult look at sites like goo-tutorials.com and pixel2life.com for some photoshop illustrator tutorials

if i were trying to get THAT look i would grab a large piece of watercolor paper, throw some lite colored tea on it to soak, a little dirt, and even some cigarette ashes and put it out in the sun and let it dry. (maybe even p*ss on one side of it, for that extra wangy look. i mean, we are all artists here right!)lol. then grab my digital camera and take a couple of pics and import it as my background. -peace.
