Newbie- Decal Printer Advice + Plotter upgrade options

Hi all,

I've been researching on the forum for a while now but finally decided to post for some advice.

I've have been making vinyl cut decals/stickers for a little while now just as a hobby for friends ect but want to expand and try to do some printed / cut decals. Ive got as far as knowing I will need a solvent ink printer to make decals that will last outdoors but really stuck finding one. Most the links Ive found on here are for US sellers and once shipping it added its blows the price tag out a bit.

What recommendations do you guys have for something good but not over the top and available in Australia. I haven't really set a budget as Im really not sure what I would need to spend on something entry level. Also open to larger/wider options if they're better value for money / wont need to upgrade later on.

Im just using a Silhouette Cameo at the moment but looking at getting a Roland CX-24 Ive found locally, its used but looks in good condition or one of those Ebay cutters.

What would you all recommend- used Roland CX-24 or brand new eBay china spec cutters?

A friend of a friend uses a eBay cutter for his small home business and says its works a treat for the price, is this true or should I stay clear of them? If these are okay for a entry cutter what ones are the best options?

Thanks in advance =)

Depends whether you are looking for an integrated printer/cutter such as the Roland BN-20, or separate printer and cutter. Any cutter would do, but you need to find a printer that will handle solvent inks and check they are avilable in your country.

I am interested also for a solvent printer but I can't find any desktop size solvent except from BN20 that is out of my budget!Any recommendations?

My recommendation would be to increase your budget.

That is the cheapest to get into solvent printers, and that one is VERY slow.
Solvent printers also need maintenance, and these parts can get expensive over time. Wipers, scrappers, captops, cleaning fluid, dampeners, etc.

For our 3 solvent printers we spend about $100 per month on maintenance. We buy what we can in bulk to save what we can.
Oh and dont forget if you need a head replaced, your looking at roughly $2000 for that repair. If solvent printers were inexpensive then everyone would have them. Oh and they need to be ran daily to keep the heads in good shape. They are a lot more work then a desktop printer.

Thanks for the reply, as I already have a cutter and can find some good used ones locally Id prefer a stand alone printer.

I have found a locally sign shop selling a Mutoh Valuejet VJ1604 for a good price and coming from a professional sign shop looks to be well maintained and looked after. However, I'm still hesitant buying used as I feel it might bite me later down the track.

If there maintenance history would 2nd hand be a a good option or recommended to stay clear?
