Hello everyone. I’ve been doing decals and screen printing from home for a few years now. Recently I decided to venture out into embroidery so I purchased a Brother PR 655. I knew there would be a huge learning curve but I’m always up for a challenge. Slowly but surely I’m learning how to use the machine but there’s so much to learn. I’m having some issues setting up the machine so that I don’t have to keep a constant eye on it for every stitch. The main issue I’m having is the bobbin not catching the thread. Last night I stitched out the tension test and noticed bobbin thread coming up and blending into the design. Does anyone here have experience with this machine or a similar one and would like to share some tips? I would love to hear from you guys. I’ve attached a picture of the first hat I did just to see how the machine works.

Have you read the manual for the machine? It tells you how to set the bobbin tension using the metal donut that comes in the tool kit. Once that is set, THEN you adjust the upper tensions. I had 2 PR600's for years, now I have 2 10 needle machines so I'm very familiar with them.

I will look into it a little more. Another issue that I'm not sure if its in the manual is the colors. anytime I try to embroider the machine automatically ignores the colors I choose and it just embroiders with the needles it wants to. Example: when I was doing the tension sample it would only do 5 colors instead of 6 even though I may have the colors anchored or unanchored. Just last night I tried to embroider something and needle 1 (black) starts to embroider but the bobbin thread is not catching on for some reason and when it does catch on it stops and tells me to check the upper thread.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet that one of the colors that you think you have anchored is not the exact same color as the one in the tension test. If you set the machine to show the PES color codes, you will probably find one that is similar but different...

Another thought - verify you have the bobbin going in the correct direction in the bobbin case. It is backwards from what you might normally expect, it unspools in the reverse direction that it is threaded onto the bobbin...

Once you get the bobbin tension set correctly, run the tension test. If the machine still keeps stopping, and try it on every needle, then you do not have the thread routed correctly on the top of the machine. Underneath each of the upper tension wheels are the thread break sensors - they look like a silver wheel. If the machine is attempting to stitch and they are not rotating, it stops. Do you have the thread wrapped around the wheels correctly? You have to go around the wheels once complete turn, then towards the front of the machine. Again, all this should be in the manual...

If not, take it somewhere to be serviced and have them show you how to set it up. When we bought our first PR600, we were given a 15 minute 'overview' on how to run it. Needless to say, I got home and spent the next 3 hours figuring out everything on my own...

Where are you located?

Here is a link to the manual...
