New to illustrator can not highlight extrude and bevel

Hi, trying to make some 3d type in illustrator when i go tot effect>3d>extrude and bevel i'm unable to highlight, why is this? This seems to be the case on most of my drop down menus.???:confused:

Not certain if this applies to your case, but If items in drop-down are gray, they aren't available.

Usually when you have a window open within an adobe program other settings & tools are not available. Just remember to adjust anything ahead of time before you open the window.

it could be that the specific item you are attempting to use that tool on is not compatible with it. For instance, those effects will not work with a raster graphic.

I don't understand, none of the options in the effects menu are available, what am i doing wrong?
