If you upload a "taller" image, it will show up taller. But with a single line of text, it is only going to be so high on the avatar. Whereas a picture like Lucy/T-Bot's is taller to start with, so it shows up as a bigger image on the avatar.

As for the different avatar "colors", you "earn" those as you contribute more to the forum (for example, a black t-shirt avatar is given once you have made 1000 posts in the forum).
