I just got a new one, with the clamp thing and spikey bit underneath the platen.

The new one wobbles with almost 1/2 inch of play.

Is this just how the new attachment system works or is something borky?

The upper platen is not rigidly fixed if that's what you're asking. Stahls calls it an upper flotational platen. It is intended to wiggle.

Not sure what you mean by spikey bit. What is that?

The old one used two black plastic bits you screwed to the platen, then bolted the platen to the press.

The new one is the quick change platen. This things moves... a lot.

I tried it with a smaller platen I had, and it locks in pretty good, but still wiggles a bit.

The 16x20 that came with it has no pressure on the clamp and rotates a full 1/2 an inch.
