Hello all!!! I'm from Long Island, NY (Nassau County) and I don't want to sound corny but I am SUPER excited!!! I hope to design my own shirts in the future... I need experience and I have none so I've scheduled a class given by Ryonet in Farmingdale...:):)

Any advice? Anyone in Long Island or New York maybe I can watch work.... or I can help out in a shop to learn a little more?:D:D Thanks SOO MUCH!!!

Preprinted shirts with your designs are risky. I have been in business for over 11 years and have not seen one customer or shop succeed with this plan. Take your excitement for this industry and sell custom shirts with your clients designs or logos. Find an asi decorator in your area, and let them handle the artwork and printing. Not trying to burst your bubble, just stating the facts.
If you decide to print your own designs, copyright them first before you make your first sale. Google united states copyright office and follow their steps.
Either way, good luck on your new adventure :)
Welcome to the forum. Nice to have you with us.
Thank you for the advice. I really am at the point where I just really want to learn the business!!! I want and need hands on experience. I read so many posts, articles and videos and feel I have to get my hands wet you know.... I'm pumped up
I took the class in Farmingdale with Greg Greco of Montage Clothing who is partnered with Ryonet. It was a fun 3 days. Make sure you take notes because there is a lot of information. Plus you will leave with a lot of shirts that you made so its pretty cool. Greg will answer any questions you have so ask away. He even stays afterwards if need be. If you have any questions for me, ask away. Good luck to you and enjoy yourself......I know you will :)

Welcome to the forum. You will have a great learning experience at that Ryonet class. Do take notes.. lots and lots of notes. Youtube has some good videos on printing too. Your enthusiasm is wonderful, just be cautious not to be overly enthusiastic so you don't get taken to the cleaners when you go out to purchase your first batch of equipment.

Thanks for the advice. I have purchased a beginning set from Ryonet and paid far less than the advertised price. I purchased the necessary items to get started after much asking questions and learning a lot from all you guys/ gals. I wanted to spend enough to get my feet while all the while not using what I have to work as well as buying some used items like a flash dryer which I found a brand used 20x something on Craigslist for less than $200. So while I'm still working and in college I have to find ways to save as much as possible but I do believe in investing wisely like the classes.
I will take notes as advised. Thanks so much.*

Ps my enthusiasm is there because for maybe 5 years I've been wanting to do this and although I haven't gone out a bought an entire shop I get excited that I am moving- even if just baby steps for now.*:)
Baby steps are fine. That's how I did it. One piece of equipment at time or a kit if I could find one. I got my stuff from Ryonet too. They are a great company to work with and they are always there to answer and of my stupid questions without making me feel like an idiot when I ask. I wish you the best of luck. They also have a training video series that's really good for future reference in case you lose your notes from the class.

The great thing about Ryonet is that even though you are taking their class they also provide with their beginner DVD's as an added value. Their so good they even buy you lunch for everyday you are there. In my book, you can't beat that. Tell Greg, Cesar says what's up.
