getting a business partner..particularly some one unknown ...is almost a receipe for failure...esp one who has the money/business knowledge.. I would urge you to rethink this and try to learn the software and then outsource what you want to...do a search and find more info.

If you do get a partner...better go the right kind of attorney and draw up an enforceable contract...400-500 dollars would be well spent and save headaches...

There are quite a few companies that you can upload your design to their web site and design your stuff then they make it and send it for you. Its a cool concept if your on a tight budget. There is even spreadshirt.com. You design your shirt and they literally do everything else for you.
You can google it and you'll get some idea's.
As for having a business partner that wouldn't make to much sense to give away part of your profit when you can get answers to all of your questions right here on this forum for free! Most people here would talk you through anything you needed to do anyway!

Goodluck!

I am having truble getting all the legal stuff like tax id number, state resale number etc etc. Also how do I copyright my designs i would cry if i saw any one else using them
I would have to agree with Charles95405, As for the the legal items, your tax person or a cpa can help with that.

Question on printing, how you want them printed, screen, or DTG

Good Luck

Brian...when starting out...you do not need a special tax ID...you can use your SSAN...I am a sole proprietor and have used SSAN for years...Apply for sale permit from your state..easy and free..just contact them. I do sublimation/vinyl/some trnasfers/rhinestones in house... All the rest I outsource..let someone else do the screen printing/pad printing etc. Do a search here about Direct to Garment Printing (DTG) ...and find an operator near you and out source. Most of those operators are too busy to try to steal a design...besides if they did that often, they would be out of business.

Move to Indiana and I'd be more than happy to get you setup :) lol

Once you have your retail permit (which you could do now... doesn't require biz plan) you will be able to setup wholesale accounts with AA and other companies to purchase the shirts yourself. Most contract printers require you to provide your own shirts, so this will be essential.

1) You have copyright upon creation of the design so there is no need to "copyright" them. You are interested in registering the copyright with the feds to protect yourself should someone steal them. While it is not necessary to register a copyright, it is advisable. If someone does steal, you will have an easier time proving your case in court if you have registered the copyright. Go to the US Copyright Office website - it can be done online. I believe it costs around $35.

2) If your design is also your company logo, then registering the trademark is also important and costs more. I think around $300 per mark. Go to the US Patent and Trademark website - this can be done online too.

3) Someone, somewhere mentioned that you don't need a tax ID number because you can use your SSN. They are correct however, the tax ID number is used as an identifier by the government, banks etc. In this day of identity theft, you might not want your SSN floating around on all of your business papers. I would advise you to get an EIN number since it is easy, free and can be done on the phone or online. Go to the IRS website.

4) As for the state resale number - I would start at the state division of corporation for whatever state you are in. They usually have all the information you need to start any type of business. There shouldn't be a fee associated with this.

I know lawyers can be costly but if you want to protect your business, it is money well spent.

Good luck!
