Hi all! I have 2 problems, which both could (I hope) be fixed with a working ICC.
So 1st, the ICC itself, I got a full kit from cityinkexpress, and got an ICC profiled by them, and it's way off. Blues are purple, reds are rusty etc...I've contacted them and am waiting for a reply BUT, I saw another thread on here...guy got from same place, same colour problems, got a replacement, was exactly the same....so I'm prepping for failure ;)
I've gone through google but I really don't know which companies are any good (don't want a repeat of the current). Hoping someone can recommend somewhere to get a custom ICC made (in UK)

Secondly, my poo-smear edges. I have a few theories about this. My design itself goes from the very top to very bottom of the mug, and is really close to the handles (I know, tricky) so you can all guess the problems there. But here's the thing, the very first mug I pressed, used the ICC profile, and it was near-perfect, just a slight browning near the handle (and of course, wrong colours). So another thought I had... I know black cooks quicker and my design fades to pure black at the edges. Is it possible my prints without the ICC are becoming too saturated at the edges and that's messing it up? (Is that even a thing? lol)

I pressed a mug last night and noticed the bottom was almost perfect, top browny. Handle edges were still ick though even though I changed the design so they were further away...I'm convinced now it's a mix of both press and print problems.
I've ordered some mug wraps (be better for my design) so hopefully I can rule out press in a few days. I'll still be stuck without an ICC though lol

If anyone has any thoughts or advice on anything I've just babbled about, I'm all ears :)

Have a good day!

Hi. Don't be so quick to knock City Ink Express. I have a Ricoh SG3110DN from them and use their profile, their inks, and their paper and the results are always perfect.

Where are you buying your mugs from? I've found from experience that the main problems stem from crap mug coatings. If you're using cheapies from ebay then it's not the CIE gear that is at fault.

As for your faded edges, again, a lot of cheap mugs are barreled, have indentations, other dings and chips, and often have black specks in the coating.

If you are trying to print edge to edge and handle to handle on good quality mugs and still having fading problems then it's probably because most mug presses can't do this. I use silicone mug wraps and a halogen oven for those jobs.

Are you sure you are turning off color management in the PRINTER setting/driver?
This is in addition to telling Photoshop to manage color and choosing the profile. If you are not, this could be what is giving you the wrong colors.

Also, Black is the last color to sublimate...not the first.

Not (too) cheap mugs, orca coated from signzworld, also got a few colour changing ones, all surfaces smooth and shiny (bits that sublimate right look awesome), been pressing simple black logos onto them aswell, and all good (albeit the black logos don't cover the ENTIRE mug). Problems start when I start adding colour. Have test-pressed to fabric with the same results :(

And yep everything is set up right, colour management is off at the printer.

I just printed and pressed some RGB swatches using different settings, and looking at them...The CIE profile one has some of the better colours until you get into blues, they're all a bit dull, no deep blues (which is a bummer for my design).
Mainly though across all profiles, inbetween black and white (greys) I just have varying shades of brown...I'm assuming that's not right?

Which printer are you guys using? For instance, if you are both using Epsons then therein lies your problem.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with using Epson printers.
They work perfectly fine when set up correctly.

We have used them very successfully for years.

They only have issues if you dont keep them busy. Which is a common issue with any equipment with Epson print heads in them. (DTG, Solvent, Pigment, Sublimation, etc.) But if you keep them busy they will last for years.

Epson = what exactly?
The same Epson printer prints colours much more precise when not using the ICC, and an old...I don't even know what it is, from the loft using the ICC prints blues as purples also...it's the ICC.
I've never had a problem with greys coming out brown, over 3 epsons and a cannon, just this ink.

So no, therein does not lie my problem o0

There's your answer then. Buy different inks and try different ICC profiles until you get something that works for you.

You say you have printer colour management switched off, but is the colour management of your software (Photoshop, Corel, whatever) set to use the correct profile? CIE supply many profiles for their inks for different paper/printer/operating systems. Are you sure you are using the right profile?
