hi there guys,

ive been looking around for artists who can do my designs and logo and i found one in Manchester (UK) since im from the UK..and this is what he replied to me....

Naeem

There are basically two scenarios...

One is that the client is buying the license to use/sell a piece of artwork I produce for them for a limited print run... they pay me a fee and royalties based on a percentage of sales and I retain ownership of the artwork. If they want to use it again for another period at a later date, they again pay a license fee and royalties. For example this shirt I recently did for the rollerblading company 'Trust' in the US Prices for something like this usually start around £300 + a figure negotiated for royalties depending on the amount to be sold etc.

The other is where the client needs me to create the logo/branding for the whole company (your version of the Nike Swoosh, Ecko* Rhino, JohnnyCupcakes Cupcake etc) that could be used on everything from shirts, products, websites, advertising, perfumes etc etc etc. This is the most important part of the enterprise because this is the whole image and product you are selling and making money from (along with the fit of the clothes). Naturally, this would cost considerably more with a price typically in the thousands or a larger share in the company. Sometimes it is a mixture of the two.

I'm going to be flying out to San Diego on the 19th of July until the end of the month but other than that I'm free to meet up in Manchester if you want to talk through things.

I hope that helps.

To me its sounds like the guy is trying to take advantage of you.. I dont think you should ever let a designer have ownership and pay him royalties unless you are giving him a piece of the company. You should just pay him as a "work for hire".
A few months ago i got quotes from designers ranging from $200-$400 a design and $300-$500 for a logo/motif.
I ended up paying $2000 package for 6 designs a logo and a motif plus other smaller things promotional graphics.
Hope this helps

there a lot of talented designer that would be happy to work with you
This guy is robbing you. He's not being dishonest about it, but at the same time he is working to maintain control of commissioned work ie what you would be paying him to produce. You are essentially hiring him to design stuff, and paying him to use the design you paid for already. the only way this works for you is if you pay no upfront commission, and then pay royalties based solely on sales, and the company maintains ownership of the designs. The designer will probably laugh at you but then you just say its just as funny as his deal. Seriously no royalties and design ownership are deal breakers. There are a million designers around the world that will be fair and happily take your money, my suggestion would be to find one.

Yes, that's what the email sounds like.

If you are contacting a highly sought after artist, their fees will be MUCH higher than other freelance artists that you can find via guru.com, elance.com, etc.

Different artists charge different fees.

I've seen artists do designs from $100 - $1200+ - it all depends on who you contact, how sought after they are, where they are located (they have a cost of living as well), how long it takes them to do their work, etc.

Some designers want royalties and some designers work for a flat fee. There's not really any "one price" that designs cost.

It's up to you to search around, negotiate, and find the right artist that meets the style you need and the budget you have :)

If that fee that was quoted is not in your budget, you can try contacting other designers as John mentioned above.

We also have a referrals area here where you can post and get designer recommendations.

Hey people thank you for advice and help. Much appreciated.

I’ve recently, well last night I created an account on Elance, and posted my job on there getting some people contacting me. Which is great. but I’m looking at their designs and logos they've created, and they all seem to be for commercial, office type businesses, and I don’t know if they would be fit to be designing for a clothing line...well that’s just what I’m saying...maybe I’m being paranoid or something...hope you guys can help...

You can always ask them if they have experience designing for clothing lines. Just because an artists has been making money one way, doesn't mean they don't have the skills to do other styles of artwork, but it's good to ask before you hire.

Did you also post a referral request in our Referrals area? I know there are designers on this forum that could also probably help you (or people who know designers that could), and posting in the referrals area is how you can get those type of leads: http://www.t-shirtforums.com/referrals-recommendations/
sounds crazy. Unless this guy actually created the nike swoosh, the cupcake etc he could not possible be in demand enough to warrant that type of contract. I have recent contact with an artist from our own forums and he offers flat fee and option for exclusive rights.
Hi,
We had our business logo designed in a variety of file formats for 145.00. I have contacted a graphic artist in our area and he works for 50.00 hr ish depending on the job. We have been happy with both people and would recommend them to anyone.
There are plenty of great designers/artists out there. Dont get into a hurry. They need to earn your business as much as you want to give it to them. Dont stop until you are happy with their work. Ask to see some portfolios of things they have done in the past. This will give you an idea if their abitlity/interest matches yours.
Good Luck
