Hopefully someone can chime in with something I'm not aware of but I've been searching for what seems an eternity...

I see three options at the moment:
1. Deconetwork, although the embroidery side of the product is a bit overlooked and now that the ties to Wilcom are a bit less binding, I'm not sure how much future development will go into it. Maybe Brendon can shed a little light.
2. InkSoft, they are hinting that there will be an embroidery option down the road. If it works as well as their print product it should be promising. I think there might be ties to Pulse as well.
3. Melco actually has a great online embroidery design product in their LiveDesigner but last year they seem to have moved away from a total website package and more towards providing a designer for integration into your website. I'm sure there are other people better qualified to explain that one but I do know when their embroidery engine seemed the most robust of all I've seen.

If you find other options put them up here for all to see. Hopefully this can turn into a full on conversation. For obvious reasons, the online designers have all taken a DTG and screen printing slant. That's obviously where the bigger market is for them. But the first to put up a viable embroidery designer gets my business...

I would start with a domain name, then a host, then I would go to www.zen-cart.com and start reading the forum. Zen Cart is a free open source shopping cart. They have tons of tutorials and the writers of the software are almost always on the forum. The only drawback to this is you are responsible for updates ,patches and designing your site. I enjoy working on that stuff it's a break from digitizing and embroidery. If you don't like that type of stuff, then I would go for a pre-made host like Deco Network. Just be ready for a price shock with Deco Network vs. doing it yourself.

Yes domain is first...

The host is important...I had a host which I had been using but every few weeks either the emails or the site is down. I just moved to bluehost.com last week and I have seen them ranked high on many review sites.

Regarding the site, it all depends on what you want done on the site. There are many templates available but for those you are limited to designing your site the way you wish to. Designing a totally new site with your own specs will obviously cost more but it will be like how you want it designed. You can have a gallery page where you yourself will have access to it to edit the images on it. Order forms are also possible. Have a look at our site to get an idea.

One very important thing to remember is take a month or two to make notes of all the info that you want on your site, how many pages? payment options online or by phone? what details to put on the order form? pics for the gallery? all the text you need to put in?
this will save you from spending more on changes later.

Ask to see portfolio of work done before you give out the job.

Keep the domain in your name.
Keep the hosting in your name.
Get the passwords for backend and save securely.
Change the passwords once the site is up and running.

Once the site is up, make sure you keep changing the layout slightly to keep people coming back. The same site over a long time makes it boring to come back.

Goodluck.

Hello Dan, i just say one thing become a professional if you want to run a online business. To becoming a professional you need and e commerce site on which you can show your products and market your site on the internet. Just pick a better domain name and a good and dedicated server than install prestashop or hire a web developing company for a e commerce site. I hope helpful for you.

Thanks for the info and have been in touch with the Live Designer people who seem very good at that.
