I just started out and didn't want to buy an expensive photo shop or Correl draw so i found this awesome program called GIMP just search it on Google its really easy to use and lots of cool effects.

Inkscape is free too.. helps with vector images.

you know if you use search tool here on the forums you will find many answers

They're fine and developing, they lack the advanced features of say, Illustrator & Corel.
