My Opaque Transfers are not peeling off, please help.

Hi,

I am new to the t-shirt printing world,
I have a heat press, shirts, opaque and transparent transfers, and everything I need.
I am printing on white T-shirts with transparent transfers, and everything is coming out fine,

But when I try to use the opaque transfers on dark colored shirts, I go to peel them off and they will not come off, only the back part of the paper is coming off, not the front, so just a big white piece of paper is stuck on the shirt.

Please help, I have tried cool-peeling, hot-peeling, and in-between.

Please help.

Thank you,

is it laser or ink jet? and if its inkjet usually its a 2 step process to do a transfer to a dark shirt(your printed image goes to another paper, and the heat pressed together then peeled and applied to a dark shirt). Also what times and temp are you setting them at ?

It is inkjet,
It is an opaque transfer paper, there is 2 pieces of paper stuck together, I print on the chalky side, but then what do I do?

Do I separate them before I print?
Who makes it? Usually there is a paper you print on(granted this is with specialty materials papers im printing on soo may not work for you), then you transfer it to the "chalky" paper (heat press them together then seperate them while hot). Your image should have afuzzy or milky white film to it, thats the side you press to the shirt.
To remove the backing I use a box cutter to cut the paper, then fold it on the cut and peel the sheet. It took a while but I pretty much have the technique mastered now.

p.s. Don't push to hard when your cutting or you will also cut through the transfer.

InkTra makes it,
it is the paper at this website:

InkTra Opaque Inkjet Heat Transfer Paper | Stahls

I don't think I have to do what you said, I cant figure it out though

Do I just take the backing off then put the thin piece directly on the shirt?
then there is nothing to peel off right?
yes, you dont have to mirror the image just print it normal, peel the back, place it on the shirt on the heat press, cover it with parchment paper and teflon sheet and press for suggested time. Remove the teflon and parchment paper while still hot.
and don't prewarm the shirt too much or let it cool down just a little bit before placing that thin piece on the shirt. Just cool enough so that it won't stick to the shirt prematurely.
What is a parchment sheet?
Do you need both or will the teflon sheet be good enough?
teflon sheet is good enough but in some situations you want to use silicone paper(parchment sheet). They give a smoother finish where teflon sheet has a coarser texture
Hi again everyone,

I am still having problems with my opaque transfers,

When I peel the backing off the paper, and try to put the paper on the t-shirt,

The Heat from the heat press causes the thin paper to curl up at the edges and sort of melt on itself, and within a few seconds the transfer is all messed up.

Let me know if you guys know how to fix this, or I am doing anything wrong.

I would really appreciate the help.

Thanks,

Michael Branson

On opaques I use transfer tape this will prevent the curling. Print, let dry, put application tape on peel backing and press with teflon then remove application tape. There is special tape specifically for this but I use a low tack vinyl application tape. Press briefly remove tape and repress.
you mean tape the peeled paper to the shirt?
Yes but I put the tape on transfer before removing backing from transfer. This also prevents any stretching of the transfer while removing the backing.
Mike,
Do not heat the shirt too much ... press the shirt just to make it flat and to take out moisture , remove the shirt from the platen if the press is on and it is not a swing away. put the design on top then put the t
Teflon sheet and press it again to the specified temperature and time.
Good luck bro
After prepress, I let it cool just a little bit before laying down the opaque transfer. I think you can use a transfer sheet if you prefer it that way.
