I want to print some shirts using spot colors instead of CMYK - the style of the graphic is fairly illustrative rather than photographic. I don't have a full Pantone-matching set of inks and mixing system. I have white and CMYK inks. I'd like to mix small batches of spot color using these inks. Is this feasible? Is this a technique anyone here has used before?

It's not recommended to use process inks to mix spot colors as the process inks are very translucent. you can do it, just very difficult to mix those inks to a specific colour (CMYK has a smaller color gamut then RGB, wich is why ink mixing systems have many colours and shades that need to be used to reproduce specific colors) and it will still be fairly translucent.
