i currently own a dtg garment printer, heat press, etc looking to possibly buy a vinyl cutter primarly for garments shirts coats etc etc.... also do stickers, some sign work, and vehicle graphics as well.

looking at the Roland GX-24 looked at this weekend at a show in pittsburgh. looked very nice and all but i have no idea what im looking at lol

been looking at other models and manufatures of these etc. the roland has some spec that seem to be considerable lower than competitures models, so my question is

1) is the Roland GX-24 the machine to have for what im going to be doing?

2) is the machine quality good?

3) other machine to consider?

4) does the Roland GX-24 have things to worry about or stay away from.

5) is it worth the money? or worth more than some of the other companies models?

6) AND MOST IMPORTANT are these machines easy to use?

thanks very much everyone for any and all replies!

i have one and it was my first one so i do not have anything to compare it to. i did do some research before i bought and i am glad i spent the extra cash to get it.
1.my opinion is yes
2.yes
3.a bunch
4.not that i have heard
5.i think so.
6. it does come with a cut program which i used for about a year or so. then i discovered cadworxlive.com and it is so much easier to use and get stuff to you machine.

i know they are not cheap but you get what you pay for. alot of guys have them and they can do so much. the only restriction would be that it's only 24in wide but how often does the ave joe need that ? get one.

The answer to all your questions is yes and no, in most circles the Roland GX24 is considered the top of the line cutter, Roland has excellent support for all it's products.

Only other cutter in it's class would be the Graphtec which you can get a little bigger cutter for the same amount of money.

As far as easy to use.....yes, but it's the cut software that makes it easy or hard, some cutters come with a trial version of software while others come with full versions, like any software there is a learning curve.

For cutting vinyl most of the cutters on the market will perform well, it's when you add cutting transfers that were printed with registration marks that the cutter must find which requires optical eye to read the registration marks, some cutters are good at this others are not.

Here's an older thread but have a lot of good info that may help you decide.

Hope this helps.

ours is 4 years old......cuts Stahls materials 10-12 hours a day.....non-stop......never an issue....easy to use.....just make sure you buy at least 2 extra cut strips when your first starting....thats the only thing that "wears out"....sometimes from user error......other times from too much pressure....GOOD LUCK
We bought the Graphtec, very good machine and it came with the stand for less money than the Roland without a stand. Used the extra money to buy vinyl.
but just cause it doesnt come with a stand doesnt mean its better, lol stand isnt going to make me money.

my biggest concerns is that it will do all the vinyls for tees coat hoodies etc..... that i will need.

any other input would be great!

thank you everyone for the help
I would say if the Roland GX-24 is in your price range, that purchase it. You wont be sorry. That machine is a workhorse.

Best Regards.
I can only tell you that from the day I received my Graphtec, it has been working like a trooper. No issues with the cutter. (me maybe) I'm sure that the Roland and the Graphtec are very close to each other.
Roland is an amazing machine. My favorite feature is the plug-in with illustrator. You can design it in illustrator click the button and its ready to go. The stand is really handy for the portability. The only downside I have found is that the lock lever on the left side comes unscrewed and loosens up, quick adjustments with a screwdriver and its good for 6 months.
You know the saying..."You get what you pay for". The Roland GX24 may be at the upper end of the cost spectrum but it is certainly worth the money.

I have had the opportunity to research and have some hands-on with several different cutters and by far I believe the Roland is the one for me. It is very easy to use and when assembled on a stand, makes it portable and very easy to use with larger rolls of vinyl.

Another consideration is the fact that the Roland's operation is very smooth and not very noisy, due to the fact that it uses a servo motor rather then a step-motor. This makes a difference in the smoothness of your rounded cutting edges.

Is the Roland worth the money, it sure is for me.

Good Luck!
Just wanted to show the detail that the Graphtec can do. I posted this to a thread that asked about how fine it can cut. This sail boat is only about 4.5" high.

run a cutter without a stand and you will realize that a stand does make you money, it's also about efficiency. IMO the Roland and Graphtec are comprable in every way but the Graphtec cost less and it sounded like you were looking for the best cutter with the best price.
