I would like to make several layer designs say red and white. My question how can I do this and keep the designs stored until needed?

create it in your software with reg. marks tape them and store them flat and in something you wont be handling theat much
look on youtube for layering vinyl if you do not know how to do it
I wonder if you could expand on this registration mark thing. I can't wrap my head around it.

When I do layers with vinyl, I press each layer to the shirt for 1 to 2 seconds, then align the next layer by eyeball... if there were reg marks, the way I do multilayer designs, they'd end up on the shirt permanently.

If you got a better way, share with us!
A local shop we went to had a bunch of multiple color designs on single sheets, do you think they may have been printed vinyl?

Ohhhh. not likely. it is no trouble to print off more on demand, so storing them wouldn't make sense. They were probably plastisol transfers... it makes sense to store them as you are saving yourself a screen press setup every time you print them.
In regular vinyl you can put in what's called a registration mark in 2 or 3 places and when you go to line up the layers, all you need to do is line up the registration marks and you should be lined up accurately. On tshirts, like you said if you use them they would be on the shirt , so using them is not usually done. Even if you used them on shirts they wouldn't be accurate because of the shrinkage on shirts is not consistant.

For storing a material with an adhesive backing, you can use a product called EZ Liner. It will store your designs and keep them from sticking to each other.

In a pinch, you can also try butcher paper or any other coated paper that the backing won't stick to.
Oh that kind of makes way more sense
