i am currently starting an urban/skate clothing line and i have tons of designs and have already found a manufacturer. the problem is i have yet to get both my name and logo trademarked and trademark searched. i found an intellectual lawyer who deals with trademarks and copyrights, she told me for her to do all the work its going to be 1500 for each trademark search aswell as an additional 1500 for every trademark! I mean she seems very professional and nows what shes doing but am i going about this the right way???? anyone!?

Go to legalzoom.com first. We did our wills and trust with them. Lou

How many trademarks do you need? A trademark is usually needed for a brand name or specific product name. Our intellectual property attorney charges $1000 for the complete registration. I can supply you with his name, etc. upon request. You probably will want to copyright your designs. That is a fairly easy procedure that doesn't require an attorney and is fairly inexpensive.

You can use a lawyer or a service like Legalzoom, but it is not necessary to do so. Sometimes folks feel like they *need* to use a service, but you don't. You can file these things yourself directly on the websites and pay only the fees to do so.

If you go to the copyright.gov website, they have very good instructions on how to do this yourself. You can copyright a book of designs for the same price as copyrighting one design, which if I remember, is about $35. The other fees are added on by the lawyers and legal services.

There is a link to both the copyright and trademark websites to the left of the forum, in the menus there. Take a look at them.

You can use someone if it makes you more comfortable, but there are quite a few people on here who have done it themselves, and remark how easy it was instead of being complicated like they thought. People here can help you if you need it, that is, if you want to try it yourself.

There are threads here on Legalzoom services. Here are two that give both sides of the coin:

The bad:
In this thread, the girl complained Legalzoom took so long, and was so inept, she did it herself after hiring them, and got her copyrights back before Legalzoom finished.

In this older one, others had good results:

The first thread is more recent, but, both show a wide array of experiences folks have had.
