Knowing Your Target Market

I keep reading about knowing your target market, knowing who you are selling to, and things will go easier for you. I have known about this before ever getting into T Shirts but now that I am doing this, it would actually help for me to really know my target market.

My shirts started from an idea I had in 2006 and I just recently started working the whole idea and bringing it to life. Cart before the horse really...I proceeded with the idea first when I guess I should have put more thought into it all. It is what it is but...

How to actually know my target market? I do not want to be a spammer so I am not posting any links here but basically, my shirts have animal characters on them that are depicting a zen state of being in unusual areas. Zen hate, stoner, nerd, b*tch...you should get the idea from that. so it is a broad idea but there has to be some way to come up with a target market...I am just not marketing oriented and would appreciate some guidance as to how to decide who that market is.

Target the Zen people, their associations, forums, communities....
The problem with that is that people that are actually into "zen" may take offense at some of these designs. They are meant to be humorous (most of them) and even a little ironic. My first design was Zen Hate...kind of contradictory to the whole zen thing but that's the point of it if you know what I mean. This is why I figure it wouldn't work for people who actually are into that.
Okay, then selecting those designs were kinda weird i believe; why don't you promote the positive ones, highlight them to your target audience. As far it is a business concern, we all go with a product line or range and market that; so little concerns get offset. Think of total instead of individual!

So essentially, you are calling my product line weird? I came up with this idea and started working it but it's weird? I see plenty of weird T Shirts out there and they seem to be working. I should market something less weird? I'm not sure what you're saying. I have a couple positive ones but the overall thought and idea behind the designs is to be somewhat humorous and maybe even a little offensive. If that makes me or my designs weird, then there are plenty of other T Shirt companies that are just as weird, if not more weird than I am.

Your shirt designs are a gimmick. Don't take offense. Embrace what you are.

Gimmick sells.

Nothing to do with Zen, as you already inferred.

Sell them in the same place where humorous but meaningless shirts sell well. You should make a killing if you nail it. I'd hit up high volume online stores, myself and supply to them for a dollar or two profit per shirt. Pile it high, sell it cheap. That's your target market, IMHO

And your name should reflect that - I think zen wear is misleading. You need a name to reflect the humour you are trying to convey with your designs.

www.ZenGoneWrong.com, for example. (I'll take 20% of sales for that one, thank you very much).

See, I'm a frikin' genius.

Gimmick doesn't offend me at all. I had loosely used the word "novelty" but gimmick works just as well. I appreciate the input.
OK, i really am
a genius. ignore the above about selling through others.

Check the URL I listed and buy it NOW (name.com have decent prices) - it's perfect for you and you can build your brand off it. You'll make a tonne if your designs are any good. Sell direct from your own Website and you'll make retail prices and retail profits.

Use the whole URL link as your brand name and you'll do great. Zengonewrong.com has the perfect ring. All you have to do is have a dedicated acknowledgment page dedicated to me, and I'll be happy. ;) I'll even send you the blurb about how amazing I am, so you don't need to write anything ;)
