Coloured ink being dumped on white layers...Kiosk meltdown?

Hi folks, was hoping someone could help us with some issues we're having with our DTG Kiosk. Just in the last week, when printing white layers on coloured or black shirts, the machine lays down vertical coloured lines.

It doesn't do it on every print, but its doing it most of the time. It'll print perfectly when doing coloured layers, and last week we printed 100 white shirts and it ran perfectly.

However, as soon as we start printing the white layer on black or coloured shirts, it starts adding the coloured vertical lines again. The lines tend to vary, but are usually approx 15-20mm in height. There are usually four lines, one of each of the cmyk colours, but sometimes they mix with each other and create other colours too. Sometimes it'll lay them down on top of the white ink, sometimes just on the shirt. It seems completely random.

The lines do look a lot like those laid down in the capping station when doing a head clean, or in the white soak pad at the opposite end to the capping station on the carriage rails.

We've replaced the encoder strip, but this made no difference, and the guide rails, belt etc have been given a huge clean, but the problem is still there.

Any help on this matter would be much appreciated. We're falling behind on our workload, so would dearly love to get this sorted asap.

Many thanks

Re: Coloured ink being dumped on white layers...Kiosk meltdown?

Helen,

I went over your symptoms with our service techs and here is what they suggested.

The most likely cause is the gear on the motor driving the print head belt. Get a pick and clean the groves in the gear. The grooves clog up with dirt over time and then the belt starts to skip. The grooves are not very deep so make sure they are thoroughly clean. Also check the belt itself to see if it's frayed. You should also clean and oil the 2 shafts on the bottom of your shirt holder tray.

Great, thanks Harry I'll give that a bash right now. Fingers crossed. Appreciate you checking in with your techs though, that's brilliant! Cheers!

Re: Coloured ink being dumped on white layers...Kiosk meltdown?

Thanks heaps for your help. Everything seems OK at the moment, fingers crossed. Have done approx 20 white prints and all is well, but we're sort of nervous it might happen again. We've been told by our agent we may need to replace the print head carriage, which apparently has to be done by an Epson agent!

Anyway, how often would you suggest we remove the belt and clean the cog? Instructions say to clean the belt once a week under heavy use, but don't say how often we should clean the cog.

Thanks again

Under normal useage once a month should suffice, we see this come up maybe 10-15 times a year from our customer base, usually from heavy users or older machines. A little cleaning every month will prevent it from happening.

Hope this helps!

We have had great success with doing all the things suggested in this thread and no longer have issues with rainbow strips being laid down on our printing. Best of all, we didn't have to replace the print head carriage :D I think the tray still sounds rough when it's being loaded or unloaded but I don't have any experience with getting at the shafts underneath the tray to clean and lubricate and there's nothing in the printer manuals on how to do it, so is there anyone out there who could give me a crash course in this?

You should clean the yellow plastic sheet mounted to the bottom of your shirt holder tray assembly. This sheet is what the rollers are gripping to pull your tray in and out of the printer. Over time the sheet picks up dirt which then make the rollers slip. You should also lubricate the rollers at the same time. You can find directions here under "Cleaning Print Bed...". The directions are for the Fast T-Jet 2 but apply exactly the same to the Kiosk printers:
