Hello guys,

I have a little question. I have been using blue grid papers since 2006, and have received many orders from customers that consisted in white isolated letters (names, sentences, words, etc) pressed in the black T-Shirt.

I always explain them that the black background will have to be printed as well, and also offer them the option of having a white marquee around the word in order to get a more good-looking impression of the T-Shirt.

How do you guys deal with these kind of things? I mean, when a customer asks you to print a word, or something impossible to cut with a cutter (it's insane to think in cutting letter by letter) that will require the background color to be the same as the fabric regardless.

Thanks! ;-)

I contour cut it with vinyl cutter. Then weed the excess material. Pick the image with magic mask to keep the placement then press it on the garment.

When it is just plain white I use Thermoflex plus vinyl. That way I don't have to worry about placement and not use magic mask at all. I just did a church banner for Easter with 13" X 20" angel. Since the wings and torso were white I used four separate pieces for the head, wings and torso from 8" X 11" and 11" X 17" blue grid transfer papers. The head was printed in color with inkjet ink. The transfers were contour cut with vinyl cutter. Since they were solid pieces I just peeled them off the backing, align each piece and assemble then press them on the banner. I even use deco-glitter on the halo, sleeve and the bottom seam.

I also cut deco-glitter with dot patterns pressed on top of back Thermoflex plus for each letter of "HE IS RISEN" and "ALLELUIA".

BTW when you contour cut small letters or detailed image use 60 degrees blade.

Yes I agree that if its white I just use vinyl. For special colors I just print the ink jet paper to whatever color I need and cut it out, weed it, and pick it off the paper with a transfer sheet. Now I just started using this method a little while ago before this I did it piece by piece so I was very limited. I have just been using the used backing of my vinyl as a transfer for the ink jet paper, its not as sticky as I would like but its serves its purpose. Sometimes its just a little more work to get everything picked up. Here is a pic of an order I just had where I used black and white vinyl and 3g jet opaque transfer paper printed red. Now I would have definitely just ordered red vinyl for this but it was a rush job so I had to use paper and vinyl backing and is was very annoying because the letters are small and the paper backing isn't sticky but I got the job done. And after all that I'm going to order 2 things: some red vinyl and some of that magic mask!

You can use a cutter that has the ability to contour cut to then cutout transfers that do not self weed. Actually that is what a lot of the smaller contour cutters get used for....cutting out transfers.
I posted a link to a review of the top ten small cutters on another page but I will do it here.
They reviewed a lot of the cutters under 24" and rated them. One thing that is nice is you can see on the chart how they compare as far as ability goes...speed. cutting presuures , what type of materials they can cut, can they also engrave, draw and emboss..etc etc.

Not that you may know if you need a particular function right now but...atleast you can see how they all stack up as it includes a lot of the popular hobby grades..ie Cricut, the Cameo etc.

Here is the link.

Thats pretty sweet but 2000$ :( What is an affordable one man use vinyl cutter..
You don't have to buy expensive cutter. I posted those videos to show how it is done. Heck you can use Cricut or cameo Silhoute to contour cut small foot print. I use Graphtec Craft Robo Pro larger foot print. I paid $950.00 for it. Maybe it is even cheaper now due to competiton.

I paid for this cutter (Silhouette Cameo) the first week I had it. I bought some vinyl and transfer paper and off to the races I went. This device is the best money I ever spent BAR NONE. It has a small foot print, easily contour cuts transfer paper, htv, etc. Heck I made a 1000.00 off one job I did where die cut magnetic sheets for a school. Whats can I say, 7 days a week it makes me money!!!
