is this temp gun enough to check the heat of the flash unit ?

That should work. Just remember that you are only measuring the surface temperature. Also, you will only be able to measure the edges of the design if the flash is close to the garment. God Bless.

The best instrument for checking temps is a probe with cross hairs. Wilflex makes one, I'm sure there are others out there but this is what we use. It is very accurate and dependable.
