Hey guys, I've recently started taking care of fulfillment myself (after dealing with cafepress for waaaaaaay too long) and I'm stumped as to how people ship things without breaking the bank. I need to ship out 3 t-shirts tomorrow, and the cheapest option USPS can offer me is $12. That is ridiculous! I thought they did some sort of awesome cheap flat rate shipping, but according to the lady, that would be more expensive...

So, my question is, how can I get my shirts to customers without it costing them as much as the shirt itself?!

Flat rate envelopes are free and around $5.50 to ship. I have done this lots. I know there are people out there shipping for way less, I think they are using bags from Uline to ship. I am sure someone else with more knowledge than I will come on shortly and answer.

I ship 3 tees in a Legal Flat Rate envelope. Cost just shy of 6.00. I ship single tees in poly mailers up to 13oz. USPS won't allow first class over 13oz. So over 13oz has to ship Priority Mail. Surprisingly I can fit a small hoodie (gildan 7.5oz upto lg) in a legal flat rate. When it won't fit in a Legal Flat Rate, I ship Priority Mail in a poly mailer (bag). 1-2lbs cost around $8-$9.00. When the weight hits 3lbs, I use a Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate box. Cost around $10.00. I can put about 6-8 tees in that box depending on the sizes. If I have to ship a dozen or so, I use what the USPS calls a Game Box (as in board game like monopoly). That cost around $14.00. Not bad for 12-14 shirts. I try to use USPS packaging as much as possible. Hope this helps.

We've begun shipping USPS Priority Mail. The post office has FREE boxes and we use Stamps.com for doing our postage. You can leave your packages with the postal person picking up your mail, or you can run them to the P.O., which is what we do because it's right down the street. We've used the small and medium boxes a lot and it hasn't been over $6.00 to ship 1 shirt or even 4 or 5. It's a great economical way to ship.
If you ship heavy stuff, the Priority Flat Rate boxes can be a good deal.
It seems that $12 is the lowest rate you can get with UPS....that's been our experience as well.

Cheapest way for 1 shirt is a bag with postage. You don't have to go with flat rate boxes all the time, I have shipped stuff from Louisiana to New York in Regional rate boxes... Hey, it came up as an option! We keep stocked with free shipping materials from UPS, Fedex and USPS.
