is it safe to buy wholesale t-shirts online?

hello I am new and starting a clothing line.

I went to my local t-shirt printing company and they charge way over market value for each unit price (shirts, sweaters etc..). I understand this because they want to make a profit.

I checked online and I can get the exact same shirt/sweater for a fraction of the price but I don't know if it is safe. Are there any?

stick with reputable wholesalers and you shouldn't have a problem. most of them will require proof that you're in business, needing your resellers permit/vendors license # (fed ID#). personally, i don't trust 'wholesalers' that don't require this information as that's pretty basic stuff and, well, needed to know in order to separate the people actually in business from the coach trying to save a couple of bucks. i mean, the whole point of having access to wholesale is savings and exclusivity.

Those of us in the biz professionally do 90% or more of the orders online with the major vendors...and I have had no issues

You can find many blank t-shirt wholesalers recommended in this forum by looking in our wholesale blank t-shirt section here: Find Wholesale Blank T-Shirts and Other Imprintable Products - T-Shirt Forums

More recommendations here: wholesalers related topics at T-Shirt Forums

We also have a Preferred Vendor section that you can view off to the left hand navigation with several reputable wholesale vendors.
Rodney has the answer...I live in Calif and I tend to use SanMar and Bodek and Rhodes as i get next day delivery if I order before noon...
You can also check out The Decorated Apparel and Promotional Products Resource
They put on the ISS shows and show have a listing of t-shirt vendors. Try and find one near you because shipping isn't cheap and free shipping usually starts at about $200, so if you're starting out, that might not be good.

Where do you live? I pretty well know who is where, I could redommend someone near you...
Depend on the online company, if they have worth in the market, check reviews of that company at Google maps as well other reviews sites and check their testimonial etc to get satisfy, then purchase the shirts.

What is "over market value"? If they are selling them, they are selling them at market value.

I think what you meant to say is that they are selling them at a price you cannot afford.

If you have your business setup and you have a resellers tax id you can setup your own accounts and buy wholesale.
My experience has been that if you Google for a garment and put "wholesale" in the search, you will mostly get what I call "fake" wholesalers - they are actually not wholesalers selling to the trade, but they want you to think they are. They are really just discount e-tailers.

Rodney's answer is more comprehensive, but you want to looking at companies like Sanmar, Imprints Wholesale, Bodek and Rhodes, S&S Activewear, American Apparel, Otto International, Outdoor Cap, Alpha, TSC Apparel, and the like. They will usually not sell to you unless you provide the appropriate proof that you are in business (Tax ID, resale certificate, etc...).

As for "safety" these are reputable suppliers, you should have no issues.
