Hello everyone, brand new to the site I am 38 yrs old, I have had vinyl stickers made and t shirts for years from others, my dad even messed with some t shirt making but I have always wanted to get a Vinyl machine to make my own stuff with. I wasn't sure what to buy or what all needed to do it other then a computer that would run the software to design the logos i wanted to cut, and a Cutter but witch one. At Christmas i almost got a Circuit but i decided not to after reading some things bad about it I decided to wait and do more research.I have really been looking at the Silhouette Cameo 3 i like it cause its pretty small, and portable if i wanted, it doesn't need the internet to work it. so with it and a laptop i could use it at events I go to.. ( Hope to have a enclosed trailer within the next yr and set it up inside of it)
Ive watched a ton of youtube videos and it seems easy to use ive been playing with the basic software for a week now i guess. I mostly plan to make smaller stickers anywhere from 1inch tall to 6inches tall at max and anywhere from 3/4 inches long to maybe 12 inches..

I want to do smaller stickers that just have mine or friends, familys names for items and more square stickers 4/5 inch tall by 4/5 inch wide for car decals or website why stickers for the car those would be longer of course..

I like to make some cups or mugs with designs on them.

Also thought about doing car tags.

This would be a personal use but maybe i could make a few bucks at it also. if i got where i got good at doing them.

and like to do some t shirts. i figured 12x12 would do 90% of what i plan to do and i could buy 12"5 ft rolls for anything longer it do up to 10ft long I cant see doing something that long..

What are your thoughts, anyone here have the machine im looking at or would something else like a Uscutter machine be better? I really can't spend $1000 for a set up I like to keep everything i buy the machine, tools, some vinyls, tranfers for tshirts to be kept under $500
I know right now they have a Vinyl Cutter Starter Kit - USCutter MH 28" for $299.99 i guess that comes with some viynl and all.. just not sure how easy or hard the software is to learn and use.

but ive read a few comments that there cheaper machines aren't that good?
Also with a big machine like that can you even use the smaller 12x12 pieces of Vinyl or does all the smaller stuff end up thrown out. you have to use big rolls?

Also from what i have read it seem the Oracal 651 is the best for outside on vehicles it will last up to 6 years? I'm sure that depends on how much its in the sun or rain.. or is there a better quality vinyl

also what is a good one for Mugs and glasses and such? i like to make some for Gifts for friends and family.

thank you anyone for any input, advice. again this would be mostly just personal use with a lil saleing on the side if i could.. Seem so many people doing it now days not sure how big the market for this stuff really is, I know when i get quotes for signs i fall over at the prices be nice make what I want. I do a pretty big Christmas Display and lots of signs i want to make.

If you are only doing this for personal use then the silhouette cameo 3 is a good pick (look for "Into the T" for help with that). If you plan on doing this as a business I recommend saving more money and buying good equipment. Like a Graphtec, Roland, or Summa. You get what you pay for, one of our graphtec plotters is still in use everyday for hours on end and it is 15 years old. Never even 1 issue with it.

Not sure why the above poster (pippin decals) ALWAYS wants to send everyone to us cutter...kind of odd that they dont suggest you buy from a vendor who supports this site. I also DO NOT recommend the us cutter plotters. Look on ebay for a used good brand name if you need to save some money.

As far as vinyl goes, 651 is "OK" for cars/trucks but the "right" material is CAST film (like oracal 751, 951). 651 is calendared and is not as durable and WILL fail much sooner.

Hi,

I'm not a vendor but I'll tell you how I started in vinyl and the results.

2000 started with a Roland Cutter/Printer ( I forget as it's been a long time). Cut 12" wide and would print in color using rolls. Didn't get the hang of it so I sold it and sat down as to what I REALLY wanted a vinyl cutter for and why.

Decided that if I was going to invest my hard earned money that I would go with a 24" wide cutter. Why? Figured that with my t-shirt printing, the bigger cutter would open more doors for me like doing dark shirts, larger decals, etc.. One of the better decisions in my life when I went with the Roland GX-24. Now I do dark t-shirts using heat vinyl, license plates that are colored, vinyl decals both one color, 2 color and 3 color, and more.

Been printing heat transfers since 1987 and cutting vinyl since 2000 and in my opinion, glad I got the larger cutter because being able to cut larger decals, signs, doing dark t-shirts, aprons, license plates and reversible license plates, I didn't have to be concerned about spending $400 for some cutter that would limit me and what I could really do, to spending $1500 for a cutter that has more than paid for itself in less than 6 months.

If you are only looking for a hobby cutter, mostly for your own use and not for making money, then perhaps a small Roland, Cricut, etc... may be all you need. But if you want to grow your business, then perhaps a 24" cutter may suit your needs.

For decals, yes, you can cut 1 color, 2 color and 3 color vinyl decals on the smaller cutters but your size may be restricted due to the width and length of the rolls but it can be done. For personal use I think it would suit your needs and pocketbook.

Should you decide to grow from doing small and personal stuff you can always sell your cutter and get a larger cutter. The vinyl you may have on hand can be used on any cutter no matter what size cutter you use.

I think if you think about exactly what you want to do with any cutter and if you plan to grow or remain as a hobbyist, that will determine what size cutter you need.

License plates, signs, etc.. can be done on a 12" cutter. I am not aware that vinyl decals should be placed on mugs and such as I would image the vinyl would peel off in the dishwasher.

Just my thoughts. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone, keep them coming.. This is mostly just be another hobby for me, if i ever got into serous selling items i would buy bigger later and let the wife have this one as a hobby craft machine for herself.. I do not have $1000+ for a cutter right now. been out of work for a while. helping take care of my father who had a massive stroke. I plan on using tax return to buy a cutter and get started.

I got the same crap somewhere else because i offer direct help. And today i finally made my point and it was accepted in another forum im part of .....Sometimes its just easier to talk then type with someone.

And let me tell you ,Every person who has ever contacted me was very glad they did. Whether it be for software help or advice on cutters or help with trying to design something .And usually with in about 15 min or less i have that person cutting and understanding and they ALWAYS say they were glad they called me .......

I have my preference as do everyone else. I can provide many phone numbers of everyone i help a lot and most are every other day or constant people who reach out to me still from all over the world.I just helped a guy in Turkey last week. And guess what .he designed up a logo for my photography business i also run for the help i gave him.I didnt ask for a thing ...I never do. If its offered than i accept sometimes.
As for cutters The brand he mentioned is from uscutter but dont suggest the model he looked at. Its an ok starter cutter but not reliable. I personally use a Titan 2 28" ( 24" cutter) and many other people i know have them and love them after my suggestions and decided to get the same one by choice...It has been flawless and made me tons of money over the past couple years ive been using it and will continue to buy another one when needed, But it comes down to what the person can afford which leaves out the TOP Dog cutters. And my cutter is on the same level as a Graphtec Ce6000 per website buying guide. I only suggest what they can afford and give them the good and bad on any cutter i know. I dont force anything on anyone, Its their choice to decide in the end, Im just offering guidance.

And for the record i did not know Uscutter was a supporter of this site as was stated by AMW. I have about 95% of advertisement pop ups blocked so i dont see everything .

And i dont know why someone gets butt hurt when i offer personal help...Sometimes its just easier than dealing with typing a message and waiting . So forgive me for being a good person and offering help how i do.

So i hope one day you and everyone else would get off my A$%$ for being a more one on one helper and just offer what you want and let it be. I dont know why you guys get so scared over a person offering FREE advice, help etc beyond you being able to see it ... If they want to contact me they can or wont ..No big deal to me .. Have a great fricken day. When my cutter is working making money i try to get on here very little as possible because of attacks like this . So enjoy your day AMW,

and Eprcvinyls do your research how ever you can before spending your money, read all reviews good and bad.You dont want to spend money twice on a mistake or a cutter too small that wont work for scraps that you will have, Thats why i chose mine... Have a good day bud. :):D:D

thank you for your time to post, Sorry I got your message, its just hectic often around here and i have very little time for the phone... Anyhow i wish the Titans were a little cheaper.. I really don't want to spend $500 on just a machine itself. when the Cameo 3 is only $200 just the machine.

has anyone here heard of a Clipper? found on ebay... Im sure Vinyl cutting machines are like everything else there so many knock offs around.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Clippe...228136?hash=item33b896e228:g:i9MAAOSw~05ZvA9u

I did notice some of the Vinyl like the Orcal 951 only seems to come in 24" rolls i couldn't find a single 12" one i guess it could be cut in half for a 12" machine but have make sure you cut it totally straight.
the 751 i only found at one place that sells it in 12" rolls so i guess that is one negative for the 12" machines.

Again not sure about software. is the others software pretty easy to learn or can the Studio basic i have already work with other machines?

Thank you all.

My issue with this is simple...
What is the definition of an "internet forum" look it up.
It is a place people come together, share info with each other, and discuss it.
I guess we should all be like you and only talk to people via prvt message and phone calls. Then we will just have a forum of short messages saying "i pm'ed you" or "Sent you my number". vs a forum full of useful information for people to come to anytime and get help.

I enjoy helping people, that is the only reason I am on here. I take time out of my day to try to help people get their business started, fix issues they are having, etc. I have severe carpal tunnel in both hands from this industry. Yet I still take the time to type out my response to the posters. That way it can be helpful for anyone and everyone who decides to read that thread. What you intend on having everyone call you to find out what your adding to the discussion?

We can agree to disagree on forum edicate.
And thank you, I will enjoy my day. I hope you enjoy yours as well.
