I am currently using an HP laptop to do my designs with Corel 6. Because I share this with my husband and I'm taking up a lot of memory with my designs... I'm in search of a new computer.

I don't have a large budget but I want one that is good with graphics. I'm not opposed to a mac either. Kinda prefer a lap top so I can be mobile.

Any suggestions?

If the only problem you are having is lack of memory, you can always get an external hard drive to store designs on for less than $100.

(OPINION): Macs are overpriced for what you get and are to be avoided. We bought the highest end Mac book pro that ended up being a 2000+ dollar paperweight. Even their "geniuses" could not figure out the problem and then wouldn't help once it went out of warranty even though the problem happened while it was still under warranty. No solution. We ended up buying a windows laptop with better specs for less than half the price.

In addition to that Corel 6 Is not supported by Mac.

According to the system requirements for Corel 6:

Microsoft® Windows® 7 (32-bit or 64-bit editions)
Pentium 4
1 GB RAM
1 GB hard disk space (for installation without content). Up to 6GB needed to install extra content
Mouse or tablet
1024 x 768 screen resolution (768 x 1024 on a Tablet PC)
DVD drive
Microsoft® Internet Explorer® 7 or higher

Pretty much any low end laptop will be able to to meet those requirements. For the best experience I would be looking for something a little more powerful like:

WIN 7 X64 bit (NOT WINDOWS 8!!!)
Dual core processor
4GB RAM

Check the big sites (like newegg) for "refurbished" or "open box" laptops. You may be able to score a great deal. You should be able to get something that will work great for less than $500.

Hope this helps!

Running out of memory as in harddrive (hdd) space, or RAM? If it's an hdd issue, you can get an external hdd - Microcenter has 1Tb drives for <$70.

As for PCs, the big problem is that there are very few Windows 7s around. I just bought a new laptop this past fall, and it was quite a production finding a Windows 7 with the specs I wanted (my laptop is my gaming machine, and needed a certain level of specs). If you want a laptop, get on Dell's website where you can custom build a laptop. You'll want at least a i5 processor, with minimum 6gig of ram, and 750gig of hdd space. That's the specs on my laptop, and even gets laggy and frustrating when editing photos for our webstore. Any less specs than that, and you'll be banging your head onto the desk cos it's so laggy and slow.

Even though I'm a PC user, for graphics, I always suggest Macs. Their integration and architecture for handling graphics and color calibration has always been superior to PCs. And as for the above post, the Apple Genius bar are no longer geniuses. They're just average schlub workers who know no more about computers than my mother. The blank stares I received when I mentioned kernel errors on my iPhone were pretty epic =P. There's a reason why professional graphic artists use Macs, and not PCs. Plus, the monitors with Macs, because they're traditionally used by graphic artists, are a better quality, with better color calibration.

A low to medium range Macbook Pro would be fine if you want to pay that much money. The new Haswell processors have some pretty awsum benchmarks, and I don't think any PC laptops have them yet. You'll get much better performance out of a mid-range Macbook Pro than you would even a higher-end PC. All my professional graphic artists and fine artists friends only use Macs.

Just to counter the un-friendly Mac opinion, ;) I bought an $8000 dell laptop which also failed, so it goes both ways.

I used to build my own pc's and you do get WAY more for your money. However, my 2011 Mac has never crashed and to date, I've not had a virus. anti virus programs tend to use up a lot of ram/ processing power in the background.

It's swings and roundabouts, really and you'll get fans of both. I'm very happy I tried a Mac, despite the hefty price premium.

Good points, definitely was not trying to start a mac/pc war. Just laying out our experience with them. I have been using macs for over 20 years with very little problems and after getting bent over the "genius" desk with our last purchase, it will indeed be our last purchase from them due to their non existent customer service. Rini, your experience essentially mirrored mine, blank stares. :)

I should add, I took our "brick" to an independent mac guru who thinks that it shipped with a bad motherboard. He said that they just don't make them like they used to. I still have a perfectly working g4 tower i bought in 1999 that is essentially useless other than my nephew playing games on it. He gets a kick out of the fact that it is 5 years older than he is!

I now build EVERY computer that we use in our shirt shop and for all of my IT clients in my other job. You get exactly what you want every time, even WIN7 :D. I was even able to build a "hackintosh" desktop for under 500 bucks that has handled every graphic a customer has thrown at it since the mac book pro died. Pretty neat if you ask me...

I guess the best answer to the OP is to get the best you can afford, and shop around. Any new computer will run Corel 6. At least for me, with mac and pc using basically the same Intel hardware it comes down to which operating system you like or know better.

Does Corel not work in OS X? I use Photoshop so do not know. If you can use a Mac, I would recommend a Mac Mini. I've used Mac Mini's since I ditched a Mac Pro when I was a professional photo retoucher and the Mini never missed a beat on heavy graphics work.

Recently picked up a brand new Mini server edition on eBay loaded with 16GB of RAM, i7 and dual 1TB internal drives for $500. I think the Mini is the best bang for you buck desktop out there.

To the above poster never had a bad customer service experience with Apple. They are ranked #1 in customer service year after year for a reason. You must have gotten a bad one.

We indeed did and it cost us a lot of money. How they handled the situation is why we won't be back. They should have honored the warranty and just given us a new one if they couldn't fix it. We still have to run both windows and osx so it's hackintosh's for us.

Unless something has changed since last summer, Corel 6 isn't available for mac without putting windows on it then running it inside. I'm not sure if 7 is compatible.

No Mac support for Corel.

The hardware are on a Mac is almost identical to pcs anymore with the exception being how memory is handled since on a Mac its a direct link to the processor and a PC its routed though the north bridge then the processor. This is why video rendering is better on a Mac.

The big debate should be the OS. Windows is vulnerable to malicious attacks where the Mac since was a very low percentage of the computing world has been left alone. There are now malicious attacks for Macs and I believe the more thy are used the more they will be present. I have a PC hackintoshed. It runs no different then a intel based MacBook except when doing video rendering like 3D modeling or editing. The graphics runs no different for what we do in our industry.

As for Apple. Years ago customer service WAS #1. Fast forward to today its really gone down hill. I was threatened by a apple manager. He actual got right in my face and bump his chest against mine. At that point I backed up and made sure he could see the .40 S&W shield on my side (usually concealed) . I called their corporate office while in the store. The other manger that was on duty came out told me the watched the video and the manager acted totally inappropriate which I was recording the entire conversation. By the time the police arrived they told the police the video in the store wasn't working that day. I might have been trespassed against their store and the entire had I not recorded the conversation with the second manager.

Wow, that is crazy. We just got the "we're done here and don't bring this thing back" stare.

Did not know that about Corel. I prefer the OS.

Interesting to hear about the customer service though, I've always been treated like a King as has everyone else I know on a personal level. And still am. I have a couple good friends that work for Apple, in the higher ranks, and I know they are supposedly a good company to work for...so I wonder why some of these "geniuses" are so angry?

I'm not a fan of the whole Genius Bar thing to be fair though.

I'm still a fan of Apple over Windows. BUT, whatever works for one person and causes them the least amount of grief is the best choice I always say.

I like my hackintosh(Mac OS on a PC)but I couldn't survive without a PC and windows. Too many programs I use just won't run on a Mac without running bootcamp or parallels and windows.

I hear ya. I have operated a Retail PC business since 1991. When asked by a customer about 8 years ago, why I didn't work on MACS, I told him I thought I'd starve to death if I only worked on MACS. Thanks to MickeySoft and PC's I have "eatin" high on the hog for nearly 24 years :D Our shop sees about 1 to 20 macs/pcs. With the XP expiration fiasco, I will likely need to hire additional staff just for replacing/upgrading business and consumer pc's with XP installed. Ain't it cool - Thanks Mr. G
