Sorry if this is a re-post, here's my question:

If I take an existing logo, for example "L.A Lakers", but I modify it and write something like "L.A Players"... both images are very similar, different but not identical, is this considered a copyright infringement ?

It's actually considered trademark infringement. The NBA and the Lakers would have every right to take legal action.

And even if it was not infringing, it could cost you a "small fortune" to win....So in my mind it is best not to go into any "grey area"....

It may seen easy to do that, but it is better to make your own designs, because when people ask about your design, the only place they can buy it is your store, which is a good thing.
