I feel like selling my t shirts with a gildan tag or a Hanes tag is unprofessional, I think it will affect my sales? The person making my shirts doesn't have blanks. Iv'e called gildan and would have to order 500+ to get them to send blanks. Was wondering what does everyone else do? what shirts do you use? I was think about using American Apparel its the in thing with the young crowd around here. Does anyone know if you have a business account you can buy blanks from AA? This is the only thing holding me back from starting my business. I know it sounds kinda silly.

You want to buy from a distributor, not the manufacturer in most cases. There are blanks with tearaway tags and no tag in the neck so you can screen in or sew in your own tags. You need to talk to a distributor like Alpha Shirt Company, TSC, Broder and plenty of others. If you want to go direct, then Alternative Apparel and Bare Apparel come to mind that don't make you buy 500+.

When people generally refer to a blank shirt, they mean a shirt without any printing on it. Tagless tees or tearaway tagged tees are different than a blank.

If you do not wish to distribute with a tag, be it yours, or someone else's, you will still need to print the same vital information about the shirt in its place. I forget the exact details, but believe it's federal law to include RN#, place of manufacture and wash instructions. If you search for "replace tags" via the search engine on these forums you should be able to find out a bit more information.

As to whether selling with a tag or without is affecting your brand, that depends on what you do and who you're targeting. I personally just leave the tags on, so that people know what they're getting, but most of my printing is either for events, or individuals. I have no real "brand", just my skills and abilities to promote, and if someone comes to me asking for a higher quality tee, then I will inquire further, most of what I do though is just basic t-shirts so I use Gildan 2000's or 5000's. Occasionally I'll order some Alstyle or American Apparel for those wanting a bit higher quality, I've never really gone with Hanes or FotL though. One of these days I'm hoping to get someone really wanting higher echelon and go with Bare Apparel, but my area's fairly despot!

Re: i feel like this is unprofessional

Here is someone I used in the past to pull out the tags and replace them with generic..and yes, they had to have some stats on them but I do know they do it both ways...

Calcru...Ask for Bonnie...They are American Made..1-800-476-9944

I am not sure if you have to do quantities. The last time I had them do something for me - as I recall it was 200-250 pieces.

Ask Bonnie about ways to do the tag just to make sure you stay within the guidelines.

It has been sometime but I am sure Bonnie can walk you thru it.

They were fast by the way.

Off the top of my head, the label information includes but not limited to:

Logo or Mark of the Property in question.
Copyright and any other legal information.
RN#
Fabric Content
Size
Country of Origin
Care and Handling information
Those funny icons that mean dry clean only, don't iron, machine wash, etc...
Any other info required like UPC code, etc...

CPSIA labels also include PO# and Month/Year of Production amongst other info.

All of the above maybe required in 2 or more languages.

all the above about tags is true.
and our customers (wholesale accounts) often look for the manufacturer's tag to make sure we are using a high quality shirt.
before port authority was so well known, they wanted gildan or hanes because they knew the name.
now it's easier to offer a variety of manufacturers, as long as the names are known.
