HTV Carrier Sheet Ghosting on Garment

2715 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  into the T
So I have an issue with some Eco-Reflective vinyl I've pressed onto a polyester jacket. The shape of the backing/carrier sheet has imprinted onto the jacket and it doesn't' want to come off.

The material I used was from Joto Imaging Supplies, and I followed the application instructions to a T (temp, pressure, time, etc.) This was the first time using this specific material, as the one I normally use wasn't available at the time. This is also the first time I've had an issue like this.

I have not tried washing the garment, as I haven't made it home from work yet, but I've got my fingers crossed this will remedy it. I've also emailed Joto (the material supplier) in case they can provide any input.

Does anyone have any advice for avoiding this in the future? Or any suggestions for removing the ghosting? I've linked a photo to the transfer so you can see what I'm talking about.

Thanks!

Hey, thanks for the suggestions. I did follow the instructions I was give with the material.

Joto Eco Reflective HTV
Press time: 15 seconds
Temperature: 310 - 330
Pressure: Medium

I had the temperature at 310, and pressure was at about a 6. Pre-heated the garment, and didn't use a teflon sheet.
Maybe I'll try dropping the pressure down a bit. I did show it to my customer and they didn't have an issue with it.

Most likely I'll just not use this material again - as I've used other ones that are much easier to weed as well as apply with no issues.

We'll see how it goes. Still no reply from my supplier about the issue either.

That's the "joy" of working with polyester fabrics. :-( The poly has melted and the extra thickness of the carrier sheet has left a cooked dent in the fabric.

You need to press with much lower temperature and lighter pressure. Joto's One-4-All product will work but I don't think they have a reflective.
If you need some temperature labels to check your actual platen temp, I will mail you some. Let me know.
310F sounds too high for polyester. You probably want to be in the mid to high 200s.
Thanks for all the help and advice everyone!

I normally use the 3M™ Scotchlite™ 5807 Heat Transfer Vinyl from Stahls - I find it is much easier to cut and weed, as well as apply compared to the Joto reflective materials. I'll definitely stick with using this in the future.

Till my next problem.

strange, as the 3m is applied at a higher temp

3m = 10-20 secs - 325-350F
joto = 15 secs 310-330F

are you using a different substrate?
because a carrier sheet is a carrier sheet is a carrier sheet,
and should not have too much influence on your substrate

try taking just a piece of empty carrier and pressing it to the garment and see what happens
The garment I'm applying too was a North End Soft Shell Polyester Jacket. I've done very similar jackets (polyester soft style), using the Stahls reflective, and haven't had any issues.

I would assume its probably that specific brand and their material, but at this point I have no way of knowing as my customer has picked up the jacket (and they had no issues with it).

I will in the future make sure to test on any customer supplied items, or if I'm using a different HTV product than normal.

We like the 3M 5807 a lot, and I am personally a 3M "hater" lol.
yeah, there is always that unknown when using new materials or apparel

that is weird though
it almost looks like the adhesive got cooked onto the garment, more than the poly melting
