Instead of importing, select open then select the file you want to open.
It might ask you if you want to open text as text or curves, depending on how the file was saved originally.

Most files are either in eps or AI file format and you can't open them in coreldraw.

You can check if abobe has trial versions of their illustrator to open these files and save them as svg files. Then open the SVG file in coreldraw and resave as cdr. In some cases, you can't open the file due to some file incompatibilities. Some of these "compabilities" are sometimes resolved by deleting the outlines with gradients before saving in svg.

You can also download freeware inkscape to open the AI files (not sure if they open eps) then save them as SVG files.

Corel will open eps files.
Corel X4 will open CS3 AI files, Corel X5 will open CS4 AI files,
providing they are saved uncompressed.

What file type are you trying to import? You don't say, just that you can't import them.

You also say that you have just got CorelX4.
Have you installed SP1 & SP2 for X4?
To find out your version, click help then About Corel.
Original Install - 14.0.0.567
After SP1 - 14.0.0.653
After SP2 - 14.0.0.701
If your version number ends in 701 you are up to date.

If not, download and install updates.
Then try opening your files again.

I have just tried importing and opening a number of different AI & EPS files in CorelX4 Draw and PhotoPaint, all opened or imported no problems.

CorelDraw will open the AI files one version lower than itself, because Corel usually releases before Adobe the latest file type is not able to be incorporated.
So X3 should open CS2 AI files. X4 will open CS3 AI, X5 will open CS4 AI files.
X3 should be able to open/import eps.

I guess I stayed with Corel Draw 9 too long. My next version of Corel is the the X3 which I got December last year. Was it a little outdated when I got it? When was the X3 released? Tried to open AI files I downloaded but none were successful so I presumed that the AI files it can open must be several versions lower. Something like legacy files formats or files of legacy versions.

Just tried opening a total of 5 recently downloaded AI files and the 1st message is "File is Corrupted". The next pop up says "Error reading <file>. I think not all AI files can be opened by CorelDraw one version higher than AI. I think that only simple AI files can be opened by Corel.

I think you are correct Dave, I tried saving 2 files in AI CS2 format. File 1 consist of simple rectangles. File 2 is a more complex design of a 3D car. Can't open either AI CS2 files in Corel X3 (takes forever to load).

But Corel X3 opened File 1 saved in AI CS1. File 2 saved in AI CS1 opened empty. File 2 also opened when saved in legacy AI 10, 9 & 8.

X3 was released in 2006
make sure you install the SP's (1&2) and any hotfixes.

I indicated in a previous post, and Dave has restated, the AI file needs to be saved with compression unchecked in the options.

It doesn't matter if it is simple or complex, if it is saved without compression then X3 should be able to open a CS2 AI file (CS2 released Apr 2005)

The AI file you downloaded could be a CS4 file and X3 will not be able to open it. If you have CS4 then resave as an eps or pdf, then X3 will be able to open it.

I see the compression check box now and uncheck it.

The simple file I saved in CS2 uncompressed opens in Corel CX3. It was opened by Corel CX3 earlier even when saved in CS1 compressed.

I just resaved the 3D file in CS3 down to CS1 and the same error message. I also saved the 3D file in eps CS1, no error message, but takes forever to load. I have 2Gb memory.

Earlier, I convert the 3D file to SVG first but the same thing. Almost all the more complex SVG files won't open in Corel but the simple ones will.

I will be closing shop now and will try again tomorrow. It would be nice if I can open AI files resaved in CS2 so I hope you will bear with my questions.

Yeah, we get lucky sometimes being able to open .ai files into Corel but never knew how to save them in .ai to do this.. thanks for the help

We are learning to print from Photoshop to the DTG , we have been using Corel for so long that we know sometime soon we need to do this because many customer files are becoming more and more Photoshop.

Its a vintage car. A big file.

But a smaller 996kb file of a Nissan GTR concept car was saved in AI CS1, EPS CS1, and PDF Acrobat 6(PDF 1.5) compabitble. My CX3 opened the EPS CS1 version after several minutes but the image shows up with lots of fine white outlines(not a perfect conversion). File corrupt message with the PDF, and the AI CS1 seems to be taking forever to load.

The smaller GTR file was supposed to be uploaded but I was unable to do so. Some security token is missing.

When you say big file, how big are we talking?
5mb 100mb 500mb?

Say we DO have a compressed AI file? I've downloaded "free" vectors that were AI or EPS and I get the error message that it cannot open file because it is compressed. Is there a way to remedy that? Without buying AI or The Suite? I work in Corel X4.
