while i don't have a brand, that didn't stop me from playing around with brand names. i went through all sorts of crazy stuff (and very disappointed, albeit not surprised, that 't-wrecks' was already taken). of them all, i had settled on a name. but, i knew i was just settling on that, it wasn't perfect for me.

then one day while doodling a design (since i suck as an artist, doodling is about as fancy as it gets for me), it rather struck me ~ this design is stupid, lame, boring and borderline offensive... so what else to call my (ficticious) brand other than 'of cosmic significance'?

so, i think most people either settle on a name or play around with names until they find one that 'feels' right, and that may just come out of the blue while listening to the radio or watching tv or in those few moments right before you fall asleep when your defenses are down. still, i think it's worthwhile to go through the process of putting those names down on paper despite knowing those aren't the right ones. i consider it practice, and by virtue of writing them you've spent the effort and thus earned the right to know those are wrong for you. in other words, by making the name a reality on paper, it can bring them into sharp focus.

thinking about it 'all day' isn't likely to give you the perfect result. you may have to wait on your muse for more than 24 hours.

I took a look at my target audience and began looking at their terminology, I then found a name that was not being used, the domain was free and it didn't sound like anything else out there, that worked out good for me. If you're doing a skateboarding line, hip hop line or even some sort of upscale line, all groups have slang terms and their own language, find something within that fits your style of clothing.

Two things to remember:

One, naming a company is like naming a child. You're going to be saying that name a million times, so make sure whatever name you pick is something that you won't get tried of hearing. It also helps if the name is relatively easy to say and has some reference to what you're selling. Having to explain your company name a lot can get tiresome.

Second, I can't stress the domain name issue enough. You can do things to make almost any domain name work, but the more work you have to put in to helping people remember your domain name, the less time you have to do other things. So make sure you run any names through a domain name search and also through the trademark and patent office search. Nothing is worse than naming a product or company and then finding out someone else has already trademarked the name.

question...how much does it cost to patent you brand or have it copyright?
