I thinks it is possible to achieve this effect by adding a distressed filter etc. to the graphics before burning it to the film. If the black on the picture is distressed, it will be uneven and bit see through. This will transfer to the film and also to the screen in a way that it will let some ink through but not so much to make it bold. Search for distressing images in Photoshop or what ever software You are using. To get a perfect printable result will of course take some playing and testing ...

Very easy to get this look with waterbase ink. Obviously the artwork plays an important role with distress patterns, etc. once the art is good burn the image in a little higher mesh. A lower mesh will lay down more ink. Try a 156 or 200. Then it’s just playing around to find how many passes and the correct pressure to use to achieve the look u want. Very easy actually.
