I use cafepress and just about all the other larger t-shirt fulfillment type companies.

I also get t-shirts screen printed and handle the shipping, order processing myself via a website.

I'd like to get more wholesale accounts to stores, so hopefully I'll be attending a tradeshow soon to help me get into offline retail stores.

what are the legalities and stuff of doing it yourself.
Not sure what you mean by that, exactly. There are lots of tips in the forum about setting up a business structure, if that's what you mean.

Taxes are just like any other income (even with cafepress, you have to pay taxes on the income earned once you make over a certain amount).

You just report what you earned to the IRS and when you have a business, you can write off some things that are related to running your business (like the cost of advertising, web hosting, etc).

We sell them through our online store. We do all the "designing" and printing inhouse. We're doing a lot better than expected, but we're probably an exception because we also run a pretty busy online forum so it helps in getting our name out there. We haven't spent any money on advertising yet, since I still need a lot of work on the designing part.
