When using a heat press to apply transfers - what's the best way to protect plastic buttons from the heat?

Place about .25" of smooth cardboard/posterboard under the area that you want to press. Make sure the buttons are off the cardboard and they should fall out of range of the heat platen. You could also lay a teflon sheet over the buttons for additional protection.

I always wonder about this stuff but never ask.

And I think why don't we do the cloth first and then, attach the button later.

Is there any reason?

I would recommend that you use a Teflon Pillow inside or at the very least under the buttons. Then I would protect them with a Teflon cover sheet.

Use a teflon sheet over the shirt and put a "pillow" inside the shirt you can get them from stahls or improvise using something thick like maybe a blanket.
