How can I separate my colors in illustrator?

10499 Views 16 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  screenprinting
Ok, so I created a design for a t-shirt, I only used black and white, and it is an illustrator file, and there is some pretty intricate detail. I am going to be using a YUDU screen printer, then print on vellum at kinkos, then expose the image on the emulsion. does anyone have any tips for me?, I need help! Please and thanks.

Please watch these two videos you'll be separating in no time.

Use PhotoShop if you dont have it get it. You're into screen printing after all ;)

If you have used only B&W you don't need to separate.

Starchild u r a saint. Thnx!
In Illustrator, you have the option of using spot or process colors. I find it easier to create all artwork using the Pantone swatch that is included in Illustrators color book library. The when you output your film, just click print separations in the print dialog box and the computer does the rest. Be sure to add registration marks and center marks to your design.
I am using illustrator CS3. I am using spot colors, separating, and saving it to a pdf. Then I send it in to be printed.
I think this is easy but I can't figure this out..
If I put my center registration marks in the same spot colors so they are on the corresponding files, only one is shown because the other(s) is underneath and it does not show on other files. What am I doing wrong?
thanks for any help.

There is a registration colour in AI it uses a registration icon in the swatch.

You need to mark the register marks with overprint on each color. Or use the ones that automatically print with seps. But the auto ones are very tiny and you may need larger regi marks to set up. The amount of detail really doesn't matter. What ever you have created will output.
Interesting! I'm wondering, I have an .ai image that is pink and black, but both colors are all on one layer, and I need to separate the two colors into two layers (one pink layer, one black layer). It's a High Res .ai file. Can anyone please direct me on how to do this in Illustrator? I need to have the colors separated into layers in order to use on my Tees.

I tried having the Digital printing done on my personal tees, and I was able to keep the two colors as one layer, but the printing on the tees did not come out to well (could be the company I used...not sure), so I want to try having some tees screen printed, but I've been told that I need to separate the pink and black into their own layers if I want to do really large or all over printing.

Can anyone help?

Thanks so much in advance...
If you have created a vector image in AI and it is spot color then seps are easy.
First the easiest thing to make this print is to eliminate any colors not used in the job.
So look at your color box and make sure that you have only two colors. Pink and black, I use the Pantone coated library available in AI. Makes selecting the color fool proof.
Then when printing to a Post Script Device like your laser printer, there will be a box somewhere marked "Separation Setup"
Click this box. Set your design for spot color printing by clicking off "Convert to Process"
Make sure the little printer icon is on the colors you wish to print and if you like use the printer registration marks.
Make sure they are positive, right reading, and the paper is the right orientation. Then print. If you wish you can also set the black to over print.
You should have two nice seps of your design to check and show the printer.
Any an all images created in AI are high rez because they are vector line art. Images imported from Photoshop or other raster images are not vector and will not print as clean as vector.
let me know if any of this is not clear to you as you may be working is a new version of AI

High DragonFry! Thanks so much for the tips, but please forgive me as I am not totally clear. While I have AI on my machine, I am still learning how to use it, so when you say 'Pantone coated library', but I don't exactly know how to find that.

The image was actually created for me, but I have figured out how to change the the pink and black colors to other colors, but I don't know how to put each of those colors into separate layers.

I am using AI cs 11.0.0, and when I go to 'Print', I don't see the Separation Setup that you mention. So are you saying the separation has to be done via the printer and not actually in AI??

(true for CS4)
Go to Window>Swatch Libraries>Color Books>Pantone Coated
In the options for the book, choose persistent so that it remains open every time you open AI.
You can also double click your swatch colours and change them to spot colours.
Choose the topmost printer, it's an Adobe Postscript printer, you can choose separations in the output box.
I think that AI11 didn't have the Postscript printer installed and Adobe did a download called AdobePS.
Both create a postscript file on disc that has separated plates.
"You need to mark the register marks with overprint on each color."...
dragonfly, I am assuming only the register marks are set for overprint not everything? I am drawing my own register marks. How do I tell adobe that I only want those lines to overprint not the rest of the same color. thank you.
There is a registration colour in AI, it is denoted by a reg mark in your swatch.
If you have created your own regi marks (and lots of screen printers do.) just select all the marks for the first color. Group them, and then in the Attributes have them overprint. Only the image you have currently selected will over print. Nothing else. Then you can copy and paste (behind "Control B" or in front or "Control F") change the color and they will over print directly on top of each other. Other info such as color, screen mesh or print order can also be included and have them over print to the correct film. Now i only have AI 8.0 so i'm running an older version but it still works and i'm sure they have not made that big a change in CS. The basics are still there.
thanks for your help. the illi version is different. in transparency I have knock out group with 3 different settings (I think) and opacity and mask define knockout shape... I'll try to look up what I should check or slash.
Also, I have some discrepancies on how to set up printing the blackest black. And then I heard that if I am printing with pdf I don't have to worry about the black settings. I am saving pdf and sending it out to get printed.
this is the different settings black should be...
which one is right?
black should be C=0 M=0 Y=0 K=100
or CMYK: 63,52,51,100 and turn saturation up
or 70,70,70,100
???
thanks
Group your layers by color. Then hide every group but one. Turn group black. Print and do same with the rest of the groups.
