Abrasive? Yes.. but you shouldn't show anything only half completed (unless you intended on an aggressive use of 'white space'). I'd be curious to see the finished product when it's done, but right now I have absolutely no idea what it's about.
you can do it with css for images too. Just put your image as the background in a div. On hover, set the background of the div to change to a different image, just like you do with text rollovers with css.
