Hook and Loop Patch question

676 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Wildgoose
I have a friend who I am going to make a handful of transferable hook and loop military style patches for. I am looking for some specific tips on the hook and loop part. I am doing the hot knife edge and wondering if I should hoop the hook and loop up on the back right from the start or sew it on afterword. He's not picky but I want it to be a decent looking finished product. This will be my first patch set ever. I'm a patch virgin. LOL

I've never tried embroidery on hook and loop but I have sewn on a lot of it with regular machines.

My insticts say you want to add it aftewords for two reasons. Firstly it can mess with proper bobbin tension, the hook side espcially. Second if you are doing a fairly dense design than all the theads on the back will effectively mask out the hook or loops making it no longer cling to each other. If you want to try hooping it in I would definetly try the loop side on the theory that it should stitch easier and the hooks can still 'grab' the bobbin thread to a degree.

Sew the patch on a material, then sew it to the hook or loop material, whichever is on top. Don't sew through the hood or loop, It will look like crap on both sides

Thanks both of you. Makes a LOT of sense I didn't think about the hooks messing with the bobbin but they probably would. I have some of the self adhesive hook so I'll sew the patch and stick that on then just run a stitch around the edge on a regular machine to make sure it stays attached.
