So I have a question for designers or any more preferably printers.

I saw this design on the KONY 2012 website.

My question is, how do you pull a design like this off when it goes to print? It looks like a photograph of a newspaper with transparent words over it?

Can a design like this be screen printed or does it have to be dtg?

I'm curious cause I like the style but don't really know how a designer goes about designing something like this.

Looks like four color process (CMYK). That's done with a good old fashion printing press. But it can also be done with dtg.

That's Red, Blue, and Black over a White underbase.

Yeah Arizona, but then how do achieve the transparent letters? The type of ink maybe?

Yep. It's not CMYK (4 color process) but probably process inks which are transparent. Maybe halftoned to get the varying densities. The Black is probably halftones in the photo area.

IMO looks to me like white underbase, print red -> blue -> black on top of it all to give it the appearance of transparency (all the text probably solid w/halftone images)

I agree Digital Vinyl ,then Heat Press it to the shirt. Works Great for dark tees.

How do you get the rough worn edge effect with vinyl?

If I vectorize a raster image - I will get a irregular shape line and if I take that line to that drawing I would get the pattern giving me a rough look. That is lot easier than trying to draw it zigzag cut line. Using the right vinyl you would not even know it was on your shirt, nor would it be cracking or flaking off. It would look exactly like that with transparency and all.

It could be transfer, DTG or screen print......
