i have a small job with a 1 color halftone fade, i thought it wouldnt be too difficult, but now i am second guessing my abilities. i really want to be able to offer this to my customers and be able to do this, my software is limited at this time to illustrator and photoshop. Can anyone help me with this process of making the transparency for burning??

I havent decided what mesh yet to use, i was thinking my 196 or higher... ?
I would recommend higher, at least 200. with a 200 mesh i would use 45lpi. this is a good setting to start with for your first halftones as 45lpi generates bigger dots making it easier to expose.

open your file in Photoshop. at the size you want to print the design, what resolution is it?

k, so we just want 1 screen to print the design, correct?
the way i produce my separations is using channels. duplicate your image into a new document and convert it to grayscale, make your adjustments as needed. next step is turning it into a halftone pattern.

image>mode>bitmap

if your resolution input is 300ppi, you can use the same or increase the output for cleaner halftone dots but 300ppi output will be fine for your first go at this.

method=halftone screen

frequency = 45lpi
angle = 21degrees
shape = ellipse or round

now you have your design done in a halftone pattern. it may display poorly on your monitor depending on the zoom level but if you print it out you will see it's ok.
to preview on screen, change the mode to grayscale (image>mode>grayscale)

is this right... i did the directions you said. But it looks like i might need to get a different file from the customer it takes out the bottom of the wings completely ...
not sure what you did, the lettering should be darker then the wings. can you post an image of the design converted to grayscale prior to doing the bitmap halftoning

this is kinda what i need but smaller dots towards the end of the wings, i need the top to be solid, not halftoned. Should i break this artwork up and then piece it back together before making film?
I separated out the wording bc it just kept halftoning the entire image.
I included an image of what the shirts should look like, But it looks like they might have used a light grey as well to accomplish this....
What do you think?

the sample shirt images looks like a one color print, i do not see any gray. i thought you wanted the wording as well, the whole design done as a 1 color print?
you need to adjust your image before doing the bitmap half toning. if you want the top of the wings to be solid, you need to adjust the image to reflect that (i often use levels). if you want a solid area (example the lettering) it has to be 100% black, anything lower gets halftones. the lower the percentage, the less halftones created.
