Gold Foil Problems - need help

3268 Views 16 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  TeddyRocky

I just received samples from Crown Leaf of fabric foil (Gold & Silver). I just tried testing gold, and it is not going well.

I printed white ink (which was previously mixed with 10% Wilflex Finesse, not sure if this matters). I did a print, flash, print, flash. (Print was smooth as butter).

Took it to the heat press, layed foil facing up and teflon on top, pressed for 15 seconds on 375 degrees F on high pressure. Released, let cool for 2 minutes (I made sure it cooled all the way). I started peeling, and it is coming out spotty, and missing lots of places.

Should actual foil adhesive work better? Im using a cheap heat press from ebay. Not sure if that has to do with anything. Any suggestions?

Im thinking your pressing to hard? I havent tried that method yet so I'd be interested to see what the problem is.
good luck.
I just tried another one using black wilflex ink straight from the bucket, I did more layers of ink.

ie. Print, flash, print, flash, print, flash.

Heat pressed the same method, but noticed the foil still didn't look smooth. So I decided to put a teflon sheet over the foil, and iron it with my home iron and it made it a lot smoother. I still have some speckles, but I think it is due to the ink not being thick enough. Maybe I need to buy the adhesive instead of using regular plastisol.
Ive heard that if you use a same colour ink ie.yellow for gold that you wont see the cracks etc. from washing..so much.

I tried using lighter pressure, and it doesn't help. What method have you tried?
ok
things to try:
1. Make sure you have your temp set right -
2. Make sure your platen is completely flat
3. DO NOT cure the ink all the way - just enough to let the transfer machine cure it when you apply the foil
4. Let it cool down all the way - I left some shirts overnight and everything peeled of smoothly.
5. Ink - do not use any additives - use ink straight out of bucket - I used Wilflex White Buffalo

Good luck
Thanks guys, I will have to try testing more. I am ordering some adhesive to try if that works any better.

To note: I tried using ink straigh out of the bucket which resulted in better coverage. I also tried more layers of ink. (and I don't cure the ink all the way, I just flash it just like any other "underbase" print.

The good news: I wash tested the shirts I did yesterday, and it looks to be very durable.
Did it not fade any? The foils that I have washed, faded after washing.
No fading at all. Surprisingly, it looks better after the wash. After washing it became more shiny.
Hmmm. I washed some red and silver from crown roll leaf, and the red faded really bad.
make sure you use foil adhesive.

the heat has to be at 320.

press completely flat for 25 seconds.

let the foil cool down .

peel.

press for 25 seconds after that.

This is exactly right, you need to use foil adhesive, it looks almost like whitish color but it is for doing foils.

I work out doing foils best by screen printing the foil and running it thru the dryer, then I take the shirt and put the foil on the shirt and heat press.

I use 350 and for 10-15 seconds
What brand of foil and foil adhesive are you guys using with success? And where are you purchasing it from?
im not sure of the brand of foil i just know it has crowns on the tape. and the adhesive is a store brand called Reetech, thats where i get my supplies. i am in Los Angeles

Alright, I am going to order Unions clear plastisol # FOIL-9200PL. I am also wanting to purchase the Release agent, which allows you to foil only certain areas of the print. For instance, lets say you have text, and you want only the outline of the text foiled, and the center just regular plastisol, you are supposed to mix a release agent into the center plastisol print. BUT, I cannot find the release agent on unionink.com. Anyone have a product # for it? And how well does it work? I have a job for this coming up soon and would like to test it out immediately. Thanks everyone!
