I would like to get a decent web site up and running, I can design them decent and know a fair amount of code, but the one thing that I just can’t seem to get past...domain name registry and the details

I have read a ton trying to figure out the details, and for the most part I understand what is taking place, maybe that’s why I keep getting stuck, the domain name I would probly go for is available, and then I fall off a cliff

Where do you register a domain name, why them, where and why do all the fees come into play, and is there no way around them

I think its fine to pay for a domain name to be registered, ok, but then I find myself sorting through an endless mess of ads, I’ve looked into godaddy, google, ect, how much does it actually cost to "register", how long is it registered for at that price, then what’s the breakdown of all the other fees that can be acquired

Maybe I’ve just been looking in the wrong places, I’ve read articles warning that you need to watch out for this gimmick or this company, that if you register with this group they will just sell off your information and double their money off you

I’m sorry to ramble on, but I’m not one to just settle for something because it’s there, I need to know some specifics and for some reason the places I’ve looked, don’t give a lot of specifics

Thanks all

usually you can register for less than 10$. I think (not sure) the fee is for their registering you name with the agency in charge of all domains or to keep others from taking it. You can pay for 1 year or up to 10 I think. I think who you register with is not quite as important as with whom you do your hosting.

lunarpages, godaddy, yahoo etc etc can be used to register but the hosting is gonna depending on you and your requirements.

Thanks for the reply

I can understand the registration fee, and even the hosting costs, I guess my main frustration is knowing where to go and making sure I’m not getting some bogus deal or something

I know for the most part it’s all basic, and all comes down to personal preferences, but I’ve never put up my own web site before, I’ve only had the small little deals that say come with your internet provider and such

I’ve been advised to stay away from certain ones, but I’m not sure what makes a good choice for the most part
