Hi there,

I am starting out going to print my own t-shirts on a heat press (am struggling to find a plastiscol/digital print supplier who actually has time for the small fish I am, but thats another issue!)

I have got samples etc from a supplier in China and they have been great so far but before I place my final order I just need to know what I should know and do to protect myself and make sure everything goes smoothly.

What costs are involved aside from the sellers cost - ex, customs clearing, pick-up from dock etc.

I dont want to find out that for my $2000 order there is an extra $1000 in fees.

Also any information on what I have to do would really help me.

My supplier recommends I ship by air as the order is small saying "it will be more or less the same as sea" air costing $745 and sea costing $100
HUH? more or less the same??

Thankyou for your help :):)

How many shirts are you importing - i.e how many cubic meters/weight? Some things could depend on that.

You should be aware of:
Shipping
Handling fees
Port service charges
GST (if over $1000 declared value)
Textile tariff tax (if over $1000 declared value)
Transportation/pick-up/Local delivery charges, if applicable

Hi friend,

First of all, i'd like to say Sea shipment will cost less than Air shipment finally, although i don't know how many pcs will you buy from China.

Maybe your supplier charge you the $100 for sea shipment, $745 will be based on door to door service(all needed cost included in that money, the shipping forwarder will pay the bill and responsible for all proceeding til the goods arrive your door, custom clearance, truking fee to your door, doc fees, all cost).

When the goods arrive you there in your designated seaport, of course, the necessay importation duties need to pay, other duties involved maybe, and related procedures you have to experiences, and cost you some money that less people to know an exact numbers. When the goods is permitted to pick up by you, trucking fee is unavoidable, hope the port isn't that far away from your w/h. Every procedure you have to take care before you get the goods in your w/h smoothly.

But the total amout will not surpass air shipment, just get involved to deal with so many procedures, bigger quantities will make sense to arrange sea shipment even if it takes 1 month more to get the goods than air.

My suggestion is, air your goods but have your supplier to get a better price since different shipping forwarder has a different quote, it will save some if they find a good one.

It will not a bad choice to ship by Sea even if to take 1 more month, try to ask your supplier if they can do one-stop service just like air door to door, give you another quote, all cost included(PS:less shipping forwarder can do a one-stop service unless they have their agent office in destination).

Anyway, wish it is a good experience to import from China.

Sorry, the total expense to ship by Air will be more or less to ship by Sea.(it is applicable for small batches goods to import from China). Like Tania said, that's the basic cost that you have to spend in OZ, here your Chinese supplier will spend more to ship by Sea. For covenience, and fast delivery time, air is a better way.

And some people go down the broker path to get you through the paper work in the end.

My manufacturer sent via EMS courier ... my order was just under $1000 AUS... my order came straight to my door.

I had the option of picking up from the airport ... but I think that was going to cost another $500 plus to get it cleared??
fill in digital forms??

Or of course then there is sea?

Unless your getting 10,000+ do not buy it from china *UNLESS* your getting a bloody good deal.
If your order is under $1000 including freight then you can use a customs clearance house of a charge of about $150-$200 however if your order is small and fits in a small box and go's thru EMS or DHL and delivered to your door you should be fine. If you are going sea mail and its $100 it must be at least a cubic meter in which case your doing a large order so look around for a customs clearance house. Ring customs and suss out your options as there is some rip of SOB's out there on the docks. Dan

I may agree with your points about these.

I don't think so, i said it not because i am from China. The determination of price is subject to the advantages, the wool is the advantage of OZ because of the good weather condition and fertile grasslands, i may tend to think the wool products in OZ will be cheaper than you buy from other places, in opposite, other countries with have theirs, just take good use of the advantage each other. In a simple word, you possibly can get better total cost to import from overseas, maybe China, maybe India, Pakistan, Sri lanka, who knows, just make the research in person some times instead of waiting, hearing, seeing is believeing.

It is my personal idea, no offense to anybody.

Thanks.

You say, you're based in Melbourne. It will cost you about 950AUD(Air Asia) to go to China and do an inspection of the quality of the shirts.

As for freight, Its simple, there are thousands of freight forwaders in China who can help you move your consignment. With Australian Customs, the value of the goods needs to be less than 1000AUD. If its more, then you pay 5% of the consignment invoice value which will be passed to you by your courier with an extra handling fee. If its less than the declared customs value, its a straight forward import procedure with your courier. The range per kilo to move from Southern China, Guangdong Province is between $5-$6USD per kilo. Don't think that, thats a big outlay as 1 t shirt, plain, is about 0.300kg. So that 2.5 t shirts to a kilo.

If you need more information, PM me as I have been moving samples and ready made garment consignment from China, Pakistan, India and Fiji coming into Australia.

Good luck.

Hi,
Hope I can help you as I have been importing t-shirts from China. First of all it will probably cost you more than$100 in just document and handling fees before you even ship your products. If your order is over 1000 AUD you also pay GST on your goods. If it helps PM me and I will give you the company I used to source and import my products they have offices in Australia and in China. As for a factory inspection there is no point in going to China yourself if you don’t speak Chinese as they will tell you what you want to hear. The company I deal with will do your factory inspections for you and have Chinese staff to do this. They will send you samples and perform your due diligence.
Hope this helps .

Use a clearance house. When I cleared my first order I got ripped a new but hole for $1500 OUCH!!! But my second one which was 2500 tshirts I got them cleared for $75 and then paid the GST and taxs etc for another couple of hundred. Call customs and they will point you in the right direction, dont get shafted!!! OR find a transfer place over there and get them to send you the transfers in a very small box!!

Nick123,

If the consignment value is less than 1000AUD, we don't have to pay any document fee in Australia, you should know this if you've been importing into Australia. Its a straight forward process, where the supplier loads it onto a courier and its gets transfered. As for going to China, mate, Chinese people are more intellectual now. One just have to locate a honest one before going across.

MONDE.....
What costs are involved aside from the sellers cost - ex, customs clearing, pick-up from dock etc.

THIS DEPENDS ON YOUR TRADING TERM (FOB, CIF, EXW etc etc) IT WOULD BE IDEAL TO GET SOME QUOTES LOCALLY HERE IN AUSTRALIA, THEN ASK YOUR SUPPLIER IF HE CAN GIVE YOU A QUOTE FOR FREIGHT FROM HIS SIDE. I FIND THAT ITS ALWAYS CHEAPER FROM THEIR SIDE. just me...

I dont want to find out that for my $2000 order there is an extra $1000 in fees.

2 PARTS TO THIS, YOU CAN EITHER BREAK THE ORDER IN 2 AND SHIP THEM INDIVIDUALLY UNDER THE CUSTOMS THRESHOLD ie $1000AUD AND DONT PAY A 5% CUSTOMS DUTIES ON YOUR GOODS PLUS COURIER HANDLING FEE INTO AUSTRALIA.

OR YOU CAN SHIP YOUR $2000AUD GOODS AND PROCESS IT YOURSELF, AND GET SLAPPED WITH THE 5% AND THEN THE HEAD-ACHE OF COLLECTING THE PAPERWORK FROM THE AIRLINE/COURIER TAKING IT TO CUSTOMS, PICK A NUMBER, FILL THE FORM, WAIT FOR YOUR NUMBER TO BE CALLED, PRESENT THE CONSIGNMENT INVOICE NOTE GIVEN TO YOU BY THE COURIER/AIRLINE TO THE CUSTOMS AGENT WHO HAPPENS TO BE HAVING A NOT SO GREAT DAY WITH HIS COMPUTER, PAY YOUR LEVY. THEN HE OR SHE WILL TAKE A LOOK AT YOU AND ASK..."WHATS IN THE BOX?...IF YOU LOOK DODGY...YOU GET YOUR BOX OPEN AND GET INSPECTED. PRAY THAT ITS A RAINY DAY AS THESE CUSTOMS OFFICERS DONT REALLY LIKE WALKING IN THE RAIN....ONCE THEY CHOOSE TO INSPECT OR NOT INSPECT, YOU'RE CLEARED TO TAKE YOUR CONSIGNMENT. WALK BACK TO WHERE THE GOODS ARE, GIVE THE PAPER TO THE LOCAL HANDLER OF YOUR CONSIGNMENT...THEY'LL SEND YOU TO THE WAREHOUSE WITH THE PAPERWORK STAMPED FOR YOU TO TAKE YOUR $2000AUD T SHIRTS...BY THEN YOU'RE HUNGRY AND PISSED OFF WITH YOURSELF....FORGETTING TO CALCULATE THE HOURS YOU'VE SPENT....WHEN THE GUY AT THE WAREHOUSE TURNS AROUND AND SAY, MATE, YOU COULD JUST HAVE PAID WILLIAM SMITH TO TAKE IT OUT FOR YOU FOR 150AUD EXTRA...

Also any information on what I have to do would really help me.

My supplier recommends I ship by air as the order is small saying "it will be more or less the same as sea" air costing $745 and sea costing $100
HUH? more or less the same??

BULL CRAP. THERES A MASSIVE DIFFERENCE WITH THE 2. AIRPORT TO AIRPORT DEPENDS ON WHICH FLIGHT YOUR SUPPLIER HAS GIVEN FOR THE DELIVERY OF YOUR GOODS. THIS SHOULD NOT TAKE MORE THAN 1 WEEK. IF ITS A COURIER RUN, [DHL, FEDEX, TOLL/SKYNET] IT SHOULD BE AT YOUR AIRPORT IN 3-4 DAYS. IF IT WAS SEA TRANSFER...GIVE YOUR SELF 6 WEEKS OR MORE AS THIS CAN BE A PAINFULL PROCESS....BUT MUCH MUCH CHEAPER.

TO HELP YOU CALCULATE, A T SHIRT IS NOT MORE THAN 0.35KG. HEAVY COTTON. IF YOU WERE TO BE BUYING YOUR SHIRTS AT 3.75USD. YOU'RE BRINGING IN ABOUT 530PCS OF T SHIRTS. 530*0.35-185KG. THATS ABOUT 8, 25KG DHL/FEDEX BOXES. THIS IS JUST FOR ILLUSTRATION ONLY..GOOD LUCK!
