Jim, I'm not sure "what" you are asking..... BUT, I use a fill stitch when I embroider columns of large text, (2" and above). Often in a design that I am doing, there is fill stitch there without a border, within the design.

When you are doing text, once it gets to a larger size, IF you are using satin, the stitches will become too wide. That might cause them to get snagged in normal use, so embroiderers change it to a fill stitch. It makes your stitch count go up, but it will last a lot longer and NOT be pulled loose or pulled out, snagged, etc.

Is this what you are asking about?

Unless the artwork requires it we never use a border around the fill stitch. I was told that a satin border stitch around a tatami fill is a European thing. It looks really nice but adds a lot the stitch count. If your question is about an outline stitch on the underlay, we always use one.

This was the question. We have an ongoing debate in our shop.

Honestly for us it's all about it's intended use. We have a few clients that need category designations on saddle pads for equestrian competitions. At that size satin columns would pose a snag hazard. But if we're doing NIKE Golf Polo's or wind shirts at $85 dollars a wack for a corporate golf tournament then stitch counts matter a whole lot less than appearance. And from my point of view (depending on the size of the fill), a column around the fill dresses it up nicely. :)
