Epson 1430 - low cost alternative is ??

5109 Views 15 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  dutySqueege
Just getting started here and are wondering what low cost alternatives to the Epson 1430 printer may exist for making film positives.

- I see at one popular online supplier we can get the below for about $1099

- but some people have said they use a regular laser or inkjet printer and print 2 or 3 positives and register them up to get it real black... is that practical?

What other techniques could we consider if we are not doing half-tone images... (we are starting with all text, spot color and/or solid color art images)

Thanks for any help.

PS - Here is the Epson 1430 package mentioned above for reference...

Just getting started and dont plan on doing halftones. Cool, still get the 1430. You do not need the package you are talking about tho. You can buy a stock 1430 for $200-$300. Why would you waste money on a different printer to get started and then have to purchase the 1430 at a later date?

Buy the 1430 by itself and add all black carts, accurip, ect.. as you need it.

I bought the 1430 package with Accurip and though I havn't printed halftones yet... the transparencies are flawless. I did a test print through the default settings of the 1430 without accurip first and it had streaks (i'm sure you can help that with the highest ink output setting). I do agree with Mike though, just bite the bullet and at least get the stock 1430. Havn't had it that long but so far it's a great printer. Good luck! :)

Personally, I started with the 1430, no RIP no nada. Still don't have RIP, still print 4 color process jobs without it. If you're on a budget you have a weapon: research!

You don't need RIP to start. Foxxins sells great film 13x19 (waterproof too). PM with questions! Good luck!
I personally tried the cheaper printer route with a Cannon Pixma that had better specs than the 1430 so it seemed logical. Edges were not as crisp as we needed so we returned the Canon and picked up the 1430.

1430 with all black refillable carts with cobra inks (CISInks work too) with Fixxons, GoldsUp USA or Ryonet films is what we use.

I agree that you don't need all of that to start. Rite Film I can't speak on but I would check YouTube for 4 process and specialty printing tutorials if you really need to save money.

The only place I have seen you can save on the 1430 lately is Staples. Watch for their printable coupon for 20% or whatever.
OK folks, you have me convinced to buy a 1430 printer. They are $299 at my local Staples.

From reading the emails I see I must buy other stuff to go with it...

I have listed the extra items I know about below with some questions...

1 - Refillable carts:
- Where do I buy these?
- Is there a best brand or model?
- I need 4... right?
2 - Ink
- Buy Cobra inks or CISInks... right?
- Buy all black ink... right?
3 - Film
- Buy from Fixxons, GoldsUp USA or Ryonet... right?
- What is the best all-round cut sheet film size 13x19?
- What about buying roll film? Is it too much hassle to cut it yourself?

Anything else I will need to make film positives with the Epson 1430 printer? (excluding rip software later on)

Thanks for the great help folks!

I wouldnt even get that far ahead of yourself. The printer will come with factory ink that will print just fine. Youtube will show you how to adjust your artwork to print your films with CMYK to be dark enough.

While you are using the factory ink you can do research and determine which bulk ink you want to buy. As for films, goldup and victoryfactory have great films for a fraction of the price that others charge.

To get started you are looking at @ $299 for the printer and about $50 for 50, 13x19 films.
Imagine It Vinyl,

I thought the 1430 had four carts and they had to be changed to all black ink to get good film positives.

Am I wrong about this?

Or are you saying you only need one black cart to get good quality film positives?

Thanks for the help.
You can print films just fine with the color carts. There are several posts on here as well as YouTube that will show you how to set the color for your printed image to 100%K as well as a smaller % for each of the CMY as well. This will get you by until you get an all black system. If you have the money upfront and can afford an all black setup then by all means go for it! If not, which was my case when I started, there is no problem adjusting your graphic color to printed dark enough for positives with CMYK in your printer.
Just go to inkjetcarts and get the refillable carts for it from the start, put all black ink in them and go to work. That way you won't have colored ink in your printhead when you purchase a rip later.
Thanks everybody. Great help !!!
I'd just use the stock inks until they're empty, then get a CISS from Cobra. I wouldn't get all black because you can also use it to print transfers!

I got the carts and screen positive ink from them and have not had a problem and I get great opaque films. I never used the Epson ink, I used the damper system from the start. Also sometimes Epson has 1430 refurbished for $199, with a year warranty.

I have the all BLACK Ciss from Cobra, its a MUST for me.
I use it daily for transparencies and to print shipping labels.
I was under the impression that the rip will draw ink from all wells
to give maximum opacity and to keep the heads from drying.
I mean all my wells draw down equally so installing CMYKBB Ciss wouldn't work. Am i wrong on this?
Okay so Im not sure if this is the correct thread for this but..

I have been trying to figure out the proper print settings for my new 1430 with the color cartridges it comes with but a having trouble getting my film to be opaque enough. I did change all of the black colors on illustrator to 100% C 100%M 100%Y AND 100%K, i have turned off fast printing, i am using the ultra premium photo paper glossy setting on photo rpm, and Im using the rite waterproof inkjet film from ryonet. A few questions about the print dialogue box:

What printer profile should i use? its on sRGB now

Also what should I put for the rendering intent?

I would appreciate any help in trying to make my new 1430 print dark films!
Sup bro? Here's your answer. Click advanced in print settings. Go to Ultra Premium Paper glossy, or whatever it's called, then under that select PHOTO RPM, Check the grayscale box and the edge smoothing box.
