EPSON 1400 Ink Cartridge Issues

2993 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  TashaTee
About to let this Epson 1400 go play in traffic in front of our design studio....
Powered up the printer, red light flashes for ink replacement, which we just replaced maybe 20 velum prints ago with UV Black cartridges... pull the cartridges pop them back in and still red blinking light.
We have 4 jobs going out friday and I really need my velum printed to burn screens.
Any help on the (I HATE MY) EPSON 1400 complex here?

cheers, -Ace

What does the Status Monitor say? Empty carts? Bad carts?
I don't think it's the printer. Sounds like you got a bad cartridge.
Empty cartridges but all of them are 1/2 -3/4 full... The magenta is not even registering half the time.

Even popped the chip out of an old one and replaced it to see if this would roll it to start working... no dice:mad:
Once a chip reads empty without a chip resetter changing them will do you know good. I have seen this many of times with aftermarket cartridges. If you continue to use aftermarket or refill cartridges I would recommend getting a chip resetter after confirming Ther is nothing wrong with printer.
I use the 1400. And.... I have put a new cartridge in and it still reads empty occasionally. I use only the OEM cartridges as I have had several bad experiences with the refilled or aftermarket ones.

Do you purchase all black ink cartridges OEM? I did not think they make such a thing...

Purchased all new OEM color cartridges today changed them all out and still no luck. Looks like I am going to have to buy a new printer on monday, $300 out of pocket.... No cool.
How old is this printer and storage conditions? I picked up a used one, it had been used more than they said ("one event") but was still quite low (15%) on the ink counters when I tested it. I found the ribbon cables for the printhead corroded. It had been stored in an attic. I got it partially working but it finally swapped to all six carts bad/unknown. The same chip bar works in the brand new 1400. I'm ticked, but you take your chances with used so oh well.

For DTG modifications, the standard procedure for this would be to replace the ribbon cables, so I'm wondering if I can do that with an unmodified printer without tearing it to pieces. I've repaired Epsons before, they tend to be pretty tough even if you abuse them (a bad clog or paper crash in a Canon will wreck the printhead while Epsons are more likely to be cleanable), I was expecting it to be badly clogged, not corroded and failing. I kind of wonder about the durability of the 1400 now.
Not sure if this is active anymore but I'm also running into issues with my 1400. I've tried everything, including taking out the print head and manually unclogging. I don't think this is the issue anymore. Before it would at least print a shoddy nozzle check. Now when I open the Status Monitor it doesn't even see any of the cartridges ( CIS, Quick Connect). I've tried changing and reinstalling the drivers, even using different computers. Could I have possibly done something to the ribbon cable? Anything else you can think of? It seems like a communication error more than anything now.
