EPSON 1400 Bulk - Fire from all catridges?

Hey folks - A few weeks ago I had found a post here that had a useful step by step of using an Epson 1400 with CIS. If I recall correctly, it included some output settings that fire from all of the catridges (whether all black or the default colors) when printing positives.

I snagged a 1400 and CIS. I do not have any RIP software at this time and am printing for fun/art sake rather than biz.

My first couple of positives haven't been very dense and it appears only the stock black cartridge is firing. Since the CIS came pre-loaded with color, I'd like to run through it before possibly switching to all black.

So, the question is: how to I get it to use all catridges? I cannot find settings that allow such control. Is this only via RIP software?

I'm currently printing from Illustrator, Mac OSX (Lion).

Is your CIS dye or pigment? Dye is preferred, but people here have used both. Ghostscript is a free RIP software, but I don't know much about how to use it yet or whether you can get it for Mac. However, you may want to do a few tests with different paper settings. Try glossy, luster, and matte paper modes. It could also be your films are not compatible with the ink you're using.
Fenrir - Good question. I actually didn't think the CIS would be loaded with ink when I bought it. I had planned to purchase BlackMaxx ink to load it. The CIS came with the printer purchase. I'd hope it came with the correct ink type for the 1400. Any way to tell for sure?

The transparencies are Fixxons, which state they are good for both dye and pigment.

So, that's the other thing, I still have not found settings for type of paper I'm outputting to.
Find a color sample chart and print it, if it's wildly different than what it should look like it's probably pigment since the 1400 needs an ICC for color matching with pigment. Also, if you print on photo paper, pigment will turn heavily printed areas matte while dye will stay glossy.

Does Epson have instructions for proper paper settings in a Mac? I recently worked on a Mac with an HP printer installed and I wanted to throttle the programmers because the only settings available were "plain paper" and "photo paper" with "draft" "normal" "photo" quality settings, while even the cheapest printers have many more settings in Windows. So you may simply not be able to do it on a Mac
I'll try the output to some Epson photo paper I have. Yeah...I had all those settings with my old EPSON 1270. I'm not sure why I haven't found them with the 1400. Pretty odd. There some some choices for the HP OfficeJet I also have.

I'll post a pic of dye ink and pigment. Looking at the ink it's easy to tell
Pigment ink....Iknow it says back dye in the back ground thats a bottle of blackmaxx

DYE below

the dye is tranlucent and the pigment is more opauqe before printing but not afterward

If installed corectly most epsons give you all the settings on a Mac there just a little tricky to find

sben763 - I think mine look like you dye photo. I'll check when back in the office mañana. I think there may be a Mac OSX Lion thing in that EPSON may not have cared to push forth a new driver with all the features and I don't think Apple has covered it either.

The CD that came with my 1400 included a paper insert specifically saying not to load the CD software if using 10.7 Lion and had instructions to us the Apple Software Update to get the driver. There are quite a number of settings that are grayed our or I simply cannot find, such as anything to do with paper type. There's paper size, but no choices regarding photo, gloss, plain etc.

I'll check your vid regarding hitting all channels. Thanks for the input.

My CIS is definitely dye, glad to say.

I finally found the paper type settings in Lion for the 1400. They are a bit hidden. So, for anyone else that might come across that part of my issue:

Once you instigate "Print" and get the first panel, in the lower left, there are two buttons "Page Setup" and "Printer..."

You then click "Printer..." which tosses an alert that says "The Print Setup dialog is provided by the operating system." "To ensure that you can use the full capabilities of Illustrator (in this case), please set all print options from teh Print dialog box."

Well, that is somewhat ironic as the full capabilities are not available unless you click "Continue" AWAY from the Print dialog. So, click "Continue."

That tossed the next panel below, but looking at it, nothing about paper types.

See Screen:

So, where to go from here? I finally clicked on "Layout" for the hundredth time and noticed a setting at the bottom of the list "Printer Features."

Once you select that, you panel refreshes and shows some oddly titled selections show in the screen below:
- en.ColorModel: color or black and white
- en.MediaType: the paper type selections I have been looking for
- en.Resolution: dpi settings
