Dye sublimation on socks

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum and have a question. I'm looking to do dye sublimation on tube socks for athletics. The issue I'm having is that I'm being told that you have to use 100% polyester which would not make a very comfortable athletic sock. Doing my research i see people are doing this on nike elite socks which are 68% polyester and very comfortable. So I guess my question is how are they doing this on a material that is not 100% polyester. I am going to purchase a pair from a company that does this but does anyone know if they wash poorly? Sorry for the long post but I'm very curios and don't want to invest in something that may not work.

Thanks

The higher the polyester content the better in some instances. A 100% poly sock with visual ribs will not press or look better than a 50% poly with virtually none. Nike Elites fall right in the sweet spot in regards to performance and visual ribs. The big guys who dominate the sock game now offer their own not so sexy socks. Compared to Elites I haven't found a "blank" white sock comparable. I found a few branded pairs that could compete but the Elite elitish are a bunch of fickle buyers. When the main player started rolling out a clearly inferior self-branded sock to their lineup, they sold and were accepted. For the small guys we get it how we live until we start doing numbers that allow us sway our core buyers to purchase an inferior sock compared to Nike Elites.

As far as washing goes. Follow the manufacturers recommendations and hang dry versus machine dry. The socks will lose some color but not necessarily anything noticeable to warrant a return or refund!!

Thanks so much for the info. It's good to hear that you do not have to be 100% polyester. I am trying to steer away from using a sock with the ribbing. I live in NYC and am going to head to the garment district and see if I can find a nice pair that may work. I will let you know if I find something that is comparable to Nike elite but it sounds like you have done you research with no luck so I am not that optimistic. Have you personally printed on socks before? If so, did you use a jig and how did they come out?

Thanks again.
