Hi guys, I searched the forum and just didn't find the answer I was looking for. Do you charge to do a simple font design layout for your local contractor type guy? Like Joes plumbing with arched font across the back with phone # and address under it and then resize it to work with a left chest print? And is it ok to charge a little extra if it is over the pocket print on the front? I have only done a couple of jobs so far but all I have done have been for people just starting a business and had no idea of a design they wanted, yet the font.I guess what I am asking if I spend up to an hour to 1 1/2 hours making a proof sheet up so they can pick 1 design out of maybe 10 what would I be able to charge? I might not of explained this well enough but the question is if I design something that is only fonts do you still charge a art fee. Thanks Scott

You should get paid for the work you do.

You could call around to other local printers to see what they charge. I've seen different printers charge an hourly artwork fee of anywhere from $20-$50.

Some will give free artwork to larger orders as part of a services benefit to land the job.

Others may give the first half hour artwork fee or they may build the cost of doing simple artwork for the customer into their printing pricing so that they have the ability to do that type of layout work and still get paid for it.

I am with Rodney on this one. You should charge a separate fee for art, even if it is a basic design. The problem with dividing it into the cost is that some customers will change the art so many times that you may be into art for several hours. Charging separately is a win-win, the more changes they make the more art fees they pay.

Another thing is that some will tell you that "your competition" doesn't charge. Either they aren't exactly telling the truth or the art is typically not very good.

Hope that helps a little...

Thanks, I guess font layout or image is still "art" thats what I was trying to get at? I use Ill. 5 for my layouts (that I am still paying for) and a rip through a 1400 and 13" wp film. I just feel like I am charging to much when I look at the bill but I do have some dough tied up in this! I do try to add in screen charges but do not show them on the invoice. I did find so good advice on this in the forum. Hay Rodney, thanks for the title change! New to printing AND forums!!!! Thanks again

I am just the guy that never finished my degree working out of my garage. Some day I would love to be able to justify making that, but I am just to new in the game! If I do, what I call a proof sheet, a page with about 8-10 small font logos on it I try to add in around $20. Most of the time, from what I found people want things changed from the L. chest to the back. So I still have about 10-15 min changing around and layout so it prints on the film right. I try to do the chest print and back on the same film, that way I only charge for 1 screen. If I have a small logo to do and have room I try to squeeze it on the same film and screen also(I do still charge the small logo a screen charge) please do not tell!!!!
